Et tu, Uvulae?

By Tsampikos, 6 years ago
In 4 days I had maybe 10 hours of sleep total.

Well the first two were justified. Kinda. I drew for about 17 hours straight again (trying to finish EVERYTHING I couldn't last month on top of this months work early), all hopped up on caffeine pills and 5 hour energy because I had the bright idea of starting at 8pm. Then, as what should have been a short break, I started playing Dark Souls for the first time since it was gifted to me on PC and I couldn't stop for 10 hours. Whatever. All in.... 2-days work, right? Resuming a normal healthy life schedule the next day?

Nope.

Fucking god damn uvulitus that night.

I'm sure most of you all have had it before, but I want to complain anyway.

I breathe in and the grape sized thing squeezes into my throat and hopefully stays behind my tonsils so I can breathe through my nose without any distressful sensation. What happens if I breathe and it pushes through this secure spot? I start gagging. Beyond sometimes dry heaving when I'm up, when I'm laying down the sensation of having this grape sized thing suspended in my throat is so intense due to the chronic inflammation brought on by allergic rhinitis and just... fuck it all. This sucks. Second night in a row with this.

Wah wah wah etc if this keeps up I'm going to the doctors/ hospital~

I hear modafinil is quite divine is ridding the need of sleep for a bit. Course I hate sleep, so I don't think my advice is quite good in that matter :B

That sounds pretty god awful. I mean I never sleep insomnia and all but if it was combined with a feeling like that it would be pure hell. Hopefully it is only a two night thing man.

O_O;; If your airway is partially blocked like it sounds maybe you ought to at least call an advise nurse line or go to the doctor. Does it always get this bad?

If your airway is blocked, go see a doctor. Don't screw with it. Breathing is required to live. Go see a doctor. Now. D<

Lack of sleep and the chemicals in energy drinks cause inflammation of soft tissue.

I'd recommend drinking lots of water and getting some sleep. Stay away from NSAID's like ibuprofen or acetaminophen. Menthol will help, so maybe try halls or some throat lozenge.

Well... shit. I've been taking ibuprofen for days because of the constant sitting/ drawing and I just a 255 tablet jar of acetaminophen from walmart because it was like $2. Thanks for the heads up, as for energy drink/ water thing.... that's all my fault. It probably didn't help that I exclusively hydrated myself with diet sota for these last few days - huh. Well, I don't usually drink coffee or take energy drinks so this was all a first time in a very long time for me and if it is the cause of it I will take that as a lesson learned.

Dehydration is a common cause of a lot of issues... just drink lots of water! Your liver will thank you later.

I don't see any problem with using ibuprofen as long as you're well hydrated. Acetominophen even more so but it's probably not going to be as effective as a true NSAID.

It's not like it'll cause any serious short term issues, but ibuprofen is still not very good for your stomach or liver. Especially if you've had a lot of energy drinks, or if you're mixing it with other drugs like cough medicine, nasal sprays, etc.

Plus if you're going to have alcohol at some point within the next week(!) after taking it you're running the risk of mild to severe liver toxicity.

There are legitimate cases where drugs like Ibuprofen, etc, are necessary but I would prefer to avoid them altogether if possible, just to minimize the stress on your body.

Not denying that discretion is important but as long as you're not giving yourself massive doses and you're not already at risk, GI ulceration isn't something I'd worry about heavily, definitely not long term.

I'd also like to hear more about the liver toxicity because the only case of that I'm aware of is a rare type B reaction.

It's more along the lines of increasing enzymes in the liver that indicate stress or damage. Also liver inflammation? But that could be the type B you're talking about. I'm not a doctor. Though I agree that the bigger risk would be the GI stuff when dealing with ibuprofen.

First of all, not sure if this is much good.
Second of all, as much as I know I can get it for free, In your position I would still DEFINITELY go and get it checked out.
Hope you get well soon!

JUST THROWING THIS OUT THERE

If I recall you said you had sleep problems. I imagine the caffeine pills and energy drinks aren't helping sleep happen. Something is wildly interfering with sleep scheduling wise and if it can actually be changed, then try to change it, even if it means giving up gaming to actually get more sleep. The body doesn't secrete B vitamins and caffeine during sleep and constant sleeplessness is going to degrade your immune system even furtherrr

Well... I haven't 'gamed' in months and the caffeine pills/ energy drinks thing is something Ive only done once in my life. In the last 5 years I think I've had a 3 four loko, one hit of five hour energy, and maybe... 3 cups of coffee, and that's it. As for gaming... I don't. I haven't logged into an MMO since June, played 8 matches of League of Legends since August, And the rest is Binding of Isaac, Earthbound, Wizardry, and Might and Magic (nes) which was p casual and 1 game per month until I beat them (BOI/EB) or lost interest (Wizardry/Might and Magic). I've almost lost all interest in gaming in favor of wanting to get my work done in order to make way for working on a personal comic full time.

If anything it's drawing and PTSD from waking up to the fire that's the culprit... but I had to put it out there lest anyone thing I'm some upper chugging gamer - which I'm not - just because I mentioned Dark Souls this once. Either way I hear you, and the fatigue is definitely setting in... some days being completely lost to a sleep, 5 hour zombie walk, then sleep again cycle~

Ugh. I feel for you. I had an overgrown uvula, so whenever I got dehydrated it would swell and choke me like that on a regular basis. I ended up having to get a uvulectomy, and when they cut it out, it was the size of my thumb.

I use my own mixes of 50% or more diluted oxymetazoline spray (in a misting bottle, because squirting doesn't work!) but I'm seriously considering this!
  tsampikos

#link     Posted: 6 years ago

Actually I'm not! The reason I use a diluted mix is because I've become physically dependent on the stuff. Stopping it's use cold turkey would result in a few weeks of absolute misery of which I have no willpower to endure, so I'm weening myself by diluting it further and further until I successfully go through a full placebo effect with my body hopefully adjusting to an existence withing constantly having the stuff around~

Well in the short term it could potentially help. Might also want to look into a course of antibiotics if there are signs of infection.

I get this about once a month, but I have chronic allergies that plug my sinuses and cause me to breath through my mouth all night. Makes my whole throat and uvula swell up. It really is the strangest feeling with your own uvula trying to choke you....

As a side note, last I checked it still hadn't managed to kill me, so you should be fine and it will swell down at some point. Like the person above said, lots of water. I would recommend some warm broth too to make it feel better.

#link     Posted: 6 years ago

Had chronic sinus issues for a few years now to the point of getting a cpap machine prescribed to me. The mouth breathing thing is a norm after 2-4 hours of using a, albeit diluted, oxymetazoline spray buuuuuuuuuuut this is the first time I got uvulitis and I fear, because of the allergy issue I'm developing, this won't be the last though yeah - as mentioned above, I take pretty bad care of myself too. Either way yeah, it's such a bizarre affliction~

I'm a horrible caffeine addict, and because of this I have learned the hard way from each individual product. None of them are good in the case of someone who suffers sleep deprivation, very few things can help because sleeping aids cause a dependency. However, in the case of an allergic reaction I'd stop all caffeine products period. A safer alternative is to casually drink green tea or other similar things, as they'd help alleviate a throat infection and also provide moderate caffeine over an evening.

Consider it a mixed blessing, at least the energy drinks have an effect on you. I can drink a 5 Hour Energy and not be affected because I made the dumb mistake of using them all throughout high school. A couple months of late night gaming later, and I have 80+ Red Bull's in the fridge which provide me less energy now compared to a full nights sleep. Just be careful, because eventually you'll end up able to drink three of those Five Hour Energy's without so much of a change in reaction time.

I've never heard of uvulitis before, but now that I know more about it, I hope that you'll be able to get medication and/or medical attention for it ASAP. :( It sounds serious if you find yourself having instances of dry heaving and gagging as a result.
