Green email is the future: We are happy to announce that Tutanota uses 100% green energy.

Tutanota goes green by switching to green electricity for all email systems.

2019-03-08
We are happy to announce that Tutanota relies entirely on green electricity for your encrypted emails. You can now use your Tutanota mailbox, knowing that all your emails are secure and green!

At Tutanota we are building the email service of the future: private and secure. Another important aspect to us is to also protect our environment, now and in the future.

That's why we are so happy to announce our reliance on renewable energy today, on a Friday. We have been attending the Fridays for Future protests together with our own children, and we are happy to finally being able to do our share as a company.

Data center switches to green electricity

In our offices we have been using green energy for a long time already.

All Tutanota servers are owned by us and hosted in highly secure German data centers, which in the past did not use green energy. While we have asked the data centers to switch to green electricity from the start, they did not change their electricity contract immediately.

Finally, possibly because our children are putting an increased pressure on companies with their Fridays for Future marches, our data centers switched to green electricity.

We are very happy that now all systems - the laptops of our developers as well as the email servers for your encrypted mailboxes - rely solely on green energy. This makes Tutanota's emails green, secure and private.

Support Fridays for Future

Using green electricity, however, is only a very small step for protecting our environment. That's why we call on our users to support the Fridays for Future.

Great news, it's really refreshing seeing a company investing in what's really important.

There is no "green" energy. Nuclear produce a trash which is dangerous for the nature. Wind and solar need lithium for batteries and it is rare on Earth. The fossil fuel I won't to talk about. That is very big and hard problem, who knows when and how it will be solved.

This actually isn't good news. I used to buy into the green energy bandwagon but the more I educated myself the more I realized that we're not given accurate information. Please educate yourself and make your own decision but this Ted talk is a great start: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N-yALPEpV4w

Germany in particular has a problem which is interesting because Tutanota is based out of Germany.

As a long-term premium subscriber, I was enjoying Tutanota not pushing the same level of virtue signalling /other/ similar providers have a tendency of doing. Stick to providing a top-notch email service instead of trying to appeal to a select crowd.

Thanks for your feedback and support! :) We are not trying to appeal to a selected crowd. We simply believe it is in everybody's interest (our own included) to do what we can to protect our environment.

You should probably take one day old accounts with one comment with a very large grain of salt.

You should probably take into consideration that some people have multiple Reddit accounts for various reasons. Get off your high-horse and realize some people have opinions different from your own.

I'm so glad you are here to tell me people have other opinions than mine, i could never have guessed.

...who are you that you get to demand anything of them? Serious question.

A paying customer, serious answer.

Bad decision.

You're encouraging unsustainable energy, destruction of the environment with horrible windmills that will stay in the countryside like nazi blockhauses, centuries after they've stopped working, because they need hugely deep concrete foundations.

You're promoting increased use of coal-powered generators, because "green" energy is intermittent ; increased taxation and bloating of the government because renewable energy is heavily subsidised ; corruption, of course, since there's so much free money to be had by just shuffling paper ; and you're generally promoting the un-scientific hoax of the so-called global warming (sorry, climate change, the high priests of that religion can't even pretend anymore that the climate is warming).

All that for a company which is science-based. You would disappear in a minute if you didn't stick by scientific facts in your specific domain of activity.

Since I don't choose my computing services providers according to whatever leftist fads they might be promoting, I'll stay with you for the time being, but let it be known that politically correct virtue-signalling is exactly what a privacy-minded company such as yours should not be doing.

Reading this makes me feel like i'm visiting some comment-circus watching straw men with tin foil hats preform tricks.

What else could one expect ?

As soon as a leftist article of faith is disputed with specific facts and arguments, down-voting happens in droves, "feelings" are invoked galore, cookie-cutter name-calling is provided, and absolutely zilch approaching a rational rebuttal or defence of the opposite opinion : old-fashioned things like facts, arguments and the like.

It's a good thing cryptography at Tutanota is not handled this way. At least, I hope so.

So what’s the solution in a righty’s mind nowadays if not renewable/green energy?

Zlivovitch

I will answer you after you have explained us how we can replace the powerful, permanent and reliable energy sources of today (nuclear, oil, gas and even coal) by unreliable, intermittent and weak wind farms and solar panels.

NS-11A

While calling fossil fuels permanent is one of the funniest straw men i've ever come across, you need to vary your act a bit. Reusing old material only makes the circus appear stale.

Zlivovitch
3/9/2019

You really don't have a clue about the issue, do you ?

Electricity production based on fossil fuels, or nuclear reaction, is permanent, because the factories producing it can work 24/24 and 7/7. Which is a basic requirement just to have electricity at all, since electricity cannot be stored.

So-called "renewables" produce electricity just when they feel like it. Explain how you would order the wind to blow 24/24, and at the right speed, at that (too slow is useless, but too fast is useless too). Explain how you would order the sun to shine in the middle of the night.

As a matter of fact, forcing unefficient and inadequate electricity production through wind and sun is self-defeating, because the more you "rely" on windmills and solar panels, the more you need to build extra capacity under the form of coal, oil or gas generators, just to provide energy when there's not enough wind or sun.

My advice to you, if you want to discuss science, is to drop hi-falutin' words whose meaning you don't even understand, such as "straw men".

What you call "reusing old material" is called, in reality-based circles, sticking to the truth. Truth does not change, however much ideologues would like it to.

That did the trick, much more entertaining!
