Someone asked about contemporary books on international relations during today's fiqh class. Here's where I would start.

The Sun said "We need less Islam if we want peace". The Spectator said "There's not enough Islamophobia in Conservative Party". The media hold some responsibility for the New Zealand mosque shootings, says James O'Brien. |

These are the Kiwis we lost in the Christchurch terror attack. Let's ensure the manner of their death doesn't define them, by remembering their lives. They were business owners, doctors, sons, fathers, wives, students, and, of course...all-blacks fans:

If I see one more sob story about how Christchurch terrorist Brenton Tarrant was a good kid or have to hear that his nan thought he was an angel, I'm going to spew. Any childhood photos of Osama bin Laden while we're at it UK press? I'm sure his nan thought he was a good boy too

Why is this image part of the phenomenon of structural Islamophobia that was talking about?

Now contrast this with how similar terrorist attacks by Muslims or non-whites are depicted on front pages of mainstream papers.

We need answers. We can't condemn so unthinkingly, it wouldn't be right or fair. And most importantly it doesn't fit the narrative. We are the good guys - this behaviour is what "those lot" are all about, not us.

The image reinforces the racist trope that whites are inherently good, loving people and that any of their number who commits such an act is an anomaly. What malign influence or tragic event could have swayed him from the norm of love and peace?

I mean never mind they're doing it on land stolen from its original inhabitants and upon whom they visited industrial scale slaughter. Who cares about their children.

The focus of the reader is instead drawn to the irenic image of the infant clasped lovingly by his father. Because in the white supremacist narrative, this is what white people are all about and all they want: to lovingly raise their angelic children in peace and harmony.

The word terrorism is not used. The "49 murdered at prayer" is in much smaller fonts and tagged on as a kind of an afterthought. It's clear this isn't what they're interested in and not what they want the reader to focus on.

But the focus of this front page is not on the depravity of this act nor of the pain and suffering of the victims rather it's on what could possible transform a cute, adorable, "angelic" blond child into a nasty "far-right mass killer"?

So what has just occurred? 49 completely innocent men, women and children have been brutally executed by white supremacist wielding an automatic weapon heavily graffitied with anti-Muslim symbolism.

He's not a "terrorist baby" but an "angelic boy" Shamima Begums dead baby was a "Jihadi Baby". That's the double edged propaganda sword of Islamophobia & White Privilege at work .....

The litany of the Sea attributed to Shaykh Abu’l Hasan al-Shadhili. Moving. Especially in light of today’s events.
