They're not going to be out of jail anytime soon, but the police are still investigating them, this apparently was not their first offense, and they are trying to find what happened to a few other people in similar situations.

Somewhat ironically, Venezuela does not have capital punishment. They can be jailed for a very long time, but the government won't be executing them.

I'm just glad that Bastion survived. Vengeance is pretty hollow compared to that.

He had some basic protection on him when he went out, but even tasers aren't very effective against multiple targets. It is easy to imagine that you'd win in a fight or be able to run away, but in reality often the best you can do is cooperate and hope that they are merciful.

As for moving him to the states, that would be the ideal outcome, but the US government isn't very keen on South Americans, particularly Venezuelans, entering the country permanently. We're doing the paperwork for it, but we are having to look into other countries first.

I had a similar experience where I was robbed and they stole my checkbook (yes I'm over 30) but they made me buy them things. The checks bounced, I was beaten pretty bad but I'm alive to talk about it. They had a gun and I was beaten but woke up in the hospital a day later.

I recommend being close to your friend, find any excuses to get outside of the house after he heals up because when it happened to me I was in the house for over a year afraid to go outside until my friends forced me to go outside.

I wanted to share it because it's hard for guys to say these things, like it's embarrassing to say you're afraid to go outside when even children love going outside or any reason. They are being charged for two counts of murder.  They weren't informed that Bastion is still alive, so we aren't going to have to do much with the courts.

As to how they can be so cruel... they are starving, just like everyone else in Venezuela, and crimes become far easier when you have mouths to feed.  Honestly, if Bastion didn't have his artwork to keep him and his family alive, it is entirely possible he'd end up in a similar condition...

The only way to put a stop to this kind of wanton death and misery is to help the people overthrow their dictator and abolish the horrid socialist policies that enabled this to happen in the first place.  Otherwise, even after Bastion heals, there is every chance this will just happen again.

Since that is a particularly tall order, we're looking at options to leave the country instead.  Not many countries want a poor artist from a volatile country, but we'll find a place.

Not to sound cold blooded, but his attackers probably thought he was dead anyway, otherwise they would have gone back to make sure.

If they were starveing, then they should have gone into a store or Resturant or something and just stole food! Just because your starveing is no excuse to murder people. Now because of this, mulitiple lives have been shatterd, not just Baston's and the driver's family, but the people who did it to. They've thrown away they're lives, lives that could have been put to better use!

This is the kind of stuff that pisses me off. Bastion is incredibly lucky to have survived! It's a terrible tragedy that the taxi driver had to give his life to stop these monsters from taking someone else's.

These horrific violent crimes seem to happen a lot in Latin American countries...

I'll research if there's anyhting I could do to help, past tossing some funds your way. I'm dual citizen US/UK and am living in Sweden; it's pretty hard times to be looking for immigration, sadly, but maybe there are options.
