These local councils are all under SDF-PYD control. Often, local participants/leaders are seen as figureheads that give cover to the PYD. Hard to imagine any of them surviving once foreign actors depart.

The PYD, like the PKK, has given real space for women's participation. But let's not romanticize the position of women either in the PYD or in Kurdish communities. A mistake, one of many, of the philo-PYD left.
