"The quest for justice for all must not obscure the fact the main responsibility for 8 years of mass killing lies squarely on the shoulders of Syria’s dictator, Bashar al-Assad, his regime cronies, and their Russian, Iranian & Lebanese Hezbollah allies."

Ziad said that Assad was transforming the country into a country of ghosts, in which the fates of those detained might be permanently hidden to protect their killers, which is a striking phrase. 10/10

Turkey, or "Erdogan", now knows that it just has to out wait a certain amount of friction from the US defense establishment to avoid any confrontation with the US as it tries to remove the YPG threat. 9/10

The support by the US today for Germany's attempt to extradite from Lebanon Jamil Hassan, one of the central figures in Assad's torture machine as the head of of Air Force Intelligence, is one of the indications that this US administration isn't going out of its way 7/10

Gilbert said Pres. Obama's policy was simply to keep Assad in power. I think is more complicated. Most notably he didn't mention the Iran nuclear deal, which seems a prime reason why Iran and Assad were given a pass. 4/10

I think they are more a tool of oppression, tied as they are to the worst actor in Syria, Assad. He thinks it was Erdogan that restarted the conflict with the PKK in 2015, I think it more plausible that it was the PKK's choice. 3/10

My intervention in the SOAS meeting was partly to disagree with Gilbert about the Kurdish led forces, which he said he would support against Turkey because of the history of Kurdish oppression. 2/
