Once they let Putin in the door it was no longer Syria nor does it belong to Syrians. It is now a soviet state that answers to the boss and no one else.

More accurately an Iranian client state as Iran is providing the manpower to physically occupy Syria. But sooner or later they will bankrupt themselves. And Russia cannot summon that kind of regional manpower. Iran not Russia is the Baathist lynchpin.
