Perfumes that you changed your mind about after a few wears

Good or bad. I've been testing Tom Ford's Tuscan leather and Ombre leather many times the past few months, most of the time side by side. I always preferred Ombre leather. Except today something clicked and I prefer the bitterness of Tuscan leather and the saffron. I really like Ombre leather but it does seem a little less dimensional with just a brighter jasmine note.

Unpopular opinion but Versace Eros. Bought it early on in my frag wearing days and quickly forgot about it once I started picking up other options. Brought it with on my last vacation since I wasn't worried about losing it and it's a really satisfying scent on cool nights. Smells young, but in a good way.

level 1

Ombre Leather is indeed not the most exciting fragrance, after the first ‘Wow!‘ that it smells exactly like the good old bad boy leather jacket.

Tuscan leather is on my to-try list as well. I stumbled upon it again and again, the last time after it was compared to a Clive Christian (X, if I remember correctly).

level 2

Close! Clive Christian C for Men is the one. It came out a couple years after Tuscan Leather and I can only assume their intent was to clone and improve TL, which I feel they did. I wear my bottle of CC C for Men a lot (I'm a woman, don't let the name fool you, totally unisex). I get many compliments from it. Smells quite close to Tuscan Leather but more lush and more berries. It's also slightly softer wearing, not as intense and supercharged as Tuscan Leather is. It's one of the most addictive fragrances I've smelled, smells very expensive.

C for Men is the Clive it's compared to. X is different, like a .. balmy semi-sweet cinnamon frag that I don't understand the hype around.
If you end up enjoying Tuscan Leather or C for Men, check out Colonia Leather.

Every heavy tobacco fragrance (Tobacco Vanille, Versace Dreamer, Pure Havane, Aramis Havana, etc.). I love how they smell when testing small samples, but every time I purchase one and try wearing it, I instantly regret it. Learned my lesson after multiple attempts.

I didn't like Sauvage much on first test, but now I enjoy it. People say it's too generic, but the strong pepper note is kind of daring when paired with such a mass appeal ambroxan base. It really doesn't smell like anything else once you get accustomed to it (except for the clones that came later, of course).

EDT you are speaking of right?

level 3

Yes.

level 1

Creed Viking. I was almost disgusted when I first smelled it back in August, now I am most likely to buy it tomorrow. I can’t really explain it myself.

level 2

viking was always going to get hate and never fill aventus shoes.poison chalice.tbh its my fav creed and the only one i get life out of.

level 3

Your definitely right. Although it‘s a pity that it gets compared to Aventus, both of them stand strong and unique.

Original Poster2 points · 6 days ago

Yeah I hear you. I've kept my sample around, haven't dismissed it quite yet. I feel like there's something there, just haven't grasped it yet.

level 3

I was able to get my hands on 3 sample vials and used 2 of them until I began to ’grasp it‘. At first it reminded me of those tiger balm (?), the chinese stuff you rub underneath your nose if your nose is stuffed. I wasn’t able to smell anything else. Now I am past it and it‘s taking a gingerbread route.

What I like most about it is that many people consider it so unpleasing and wearing it adds an provocative note to your appearance, especially in a business-casual environment.

The one I'm wearing today, Dali Pour Homme, fits the bill. First time I put it on I thought something had died in my bottle haha. Now it's my favorite old school fougere.

Zoologist challenged me with Hyrax and T-Rex, both of which I love now.

One of my favorites. Over apply and you will feel like this. I got a mini, really liked it, swapped something else for a bottle. That was months ago, and I'm still using the mini. Stuff is potent. It's also great to layer under sweet, airy, stuff.

Alright man, that link killed me. You have blood on your hands.

Philosophy Amazing Grace. I got it a few weeks ago because I love the hand soap and lotion, but the parfum is off-putting to me. I’m planning on gifting it to my mom for Mother’s Day. She will love it!

level 1

I liked Demeter Kitten Fur for a few days and now it just annoys me because it doesn't remind me of kittens in any way. Just like if I sprinkled baby powder on a kitten maybe.

Sauvage - pepper hits me now

level 2

Gives me a headache. Smells too synthetic . It’s not terrible, I see how some like it

level 3

Same. It's like the most 'designer' smelling designer fragrance of all time. Sadly I don't mean that in a good way.

Stuff is kind of constantly changing. Things that blew me away at first become more 'pedestrian' after a while. It seems to be the ones that grow on you are the ones that end up becoming more long term favorites.
Also when if you get your nose on more and more stuff you may notice more and more parts of fragrances you didn't notice before.
Colonia Oud isn't as 'WOW!' as it first was. Still good stuff though.
Ultra Male reminded me of a car air freshener at first, then grew on me more.
Al-Khatt was okay/good at first, then boom hit me like a brick and fell in love.
Terre d'Hermes EdT - didn't care for it at first, years later it's <3.
Guerlain Vetiver smelled ..old... to me at first and was meh. Then fell in love with it.
Gucci Guilty Absolute Pour Homme - didn't care for it at first, then smelled a little good, then <3.

I've sold off so many freaking frags, only to re-acquire (and sell off again however many) after realizing they were actually the good ones and I missed them/wanted them back, haha.

and then there's the outliers that are basically at the top for you from the very beginning and just stay that way. Like Kouros and Fahrenheit.

It seems like you like a lot of bold and stronger fragrances.

level 3
King Kouros1 point · 6 days ago

I suppose, haha. I do enjoy lighter stuff though as well - Eau Sauvage (wearing it right now!), Dia Man, Eau d'Hermes, Gucci Pour Homme II, Eau de Rochas (Pour) Homme, etc.
But yeah, I may lean more into oriental and such type territory. Though I have an odd fascination/interest with old-school freshie type of stuff like Eau Sauvage and Armani Eau Pour Homme.

level 1

Maybe not quite the same-but I have had a similar experience with a particular note. I found the note of Neroli very off putting-the first time I smelled a neroli dominant fragrance (4711 cologne). Now A few years later and I can’t seem to get enough of it, I blind buy frags because they are heavy in neroli or orange blossom .

Two fragrances that changed on me for worse after months of wear are Prada Candy and L'Air du Désert Marocain. I only miss LADDM.

Changed for better:

Sauf Contre Bombarde 32 (didn't like it when first applied, liked it more and more the longer it was on my skin).

Selperniku -- Compelling but very strange, dominating, and somewhat off-putting camphor-herbal smell (juniper), especially on top of salted butter and milk. Less strange after a couple of weeks, and the camphor note subsided. Didn't even know if I liked it, but wanted to continue wearing it and bought a bottle. My perception of the accords has adjusted even more In a year. There's still butter, but the juniper is now merely aromatic, and there's also petitgrain, apricot, and other stuff I couldn't smell at first. It'll never be mainstream though.

Mirus Elysian Fields: Got an early sample that had some note that was unbearable to me, something citric and so strong it flew up my nose and stuck to my fingers from just handling the vial. I put it away. Months later, whatever it was mellowed and it smells good!

I used to be able to smell leather as an accord. With few exceptions, leather in a perfume now just smells like the separate notes that are supposed to coalesce into leather, but don't.

level 2
Original Poster1 point · 6 days ago

I've found the same thing about leather scents now. I think when you smell a leather scent for the very first time, you definitely smell more of a leather accord. But after a few wears the novelty kind of disappears and you actually get the different notes.

level 1

I used to absolutely hate joop Homme it was always on my friend shelf and I found it rank.. I then started getting into fragrances more and bought it because I needed some old school and now I love it

level 2

I've never smelled Joop and don't have easy access to it. What is it that people find so cloying about it? If I tend to like sweeter scents like one million and eros, do you think I would like Joop?

level 2
Original Poster0 points · 6 days ago

It's funny you say that about older and old school fragrances. I've found that you gotta give it a chance or at least a few tries, because most of the time it's easy to get turned off at the initial whiff. That being said I don't think I want to try Kouros again lol.

level 3

Kouros smells like piss stones in a pub urinals

It was also very linear in my experience but also very strong.

Try one of the flankers first. It might make you appreciate the original more. Then you can whiff the OG again.

• Roberto Cavalli Uomo, at first i thought huh this is a perfume nothing else but after i used it i was like wow wait should any perfume perform like this ?! The lasting on this thing is crazy and the smell is unique not the best but the honey vanilla mix is sweet, i think this perfume fit 20-35 men and imo u can use it all the year except hot summer days, althought it is safe to blindbuy this gem u better try it before u buy.

Rating : smell 8/10 sillage:8/10 lasting :10/10 overall: 8.5/10

level 1

Givenchy pour homme blue label. It always seems to get compliments even though to me it seems like another "blue scent" a go one, but still. Anyway I have most of mine left, waiting for summer/spring again.

level 1

I went from hating to loving Dior "Leather Oud". I couldn't believe this was a real fragrance the first time I smelled it, let alone that it was a Christian Dior fragrance. I actually found it to be rather repulsive because of how dirty it smelled. Then years later I smelled it randomly on an SA at Dior in Vegas and I swooned hard, my brain finally "got it" and I now wonder how I ever thought it was anything less than amazing.

level 1

I smelled Elizabeth’s vetiver in store and was cray about it and when I bought it completely changed my mind. It’s way too masculine.

level 1

Nasturtium & Clover by Jo Malone London. I was not impressed by this. I thought it was boring. But after wearing it for a few weeks, it really grew on me and I began to appreciate it. Such a green, beautiful scent that is so fresh. Smells like nature. Smells like fresh cut clover and green grass. It turned out to be wonderful.

level 1

I went from absolutely hating Aventus the first time I smelled it to absolutely loving it when I smelled it again 15 months later.

And I went from going googoo eyes over Jubilation XXV to just feeling OK towards it after 3 full wearings.

Just recently I was complaining on here that I don't get the hype about Portrait of a Lady, and yesterday I ended up buying the damned thing. I'd tried it 4 times, 4 Saturdays in a row (That's my 'shopping day') last Saturday I smelled it and it kind of got stuck in my head like 'Hmm maybe this is actually good?' and this Saturday it was like 'Wow, this is actually great!'

My own reaction a month ago vs. now really reminded me of this meme: https://pics.me.me/when-you-play-their-favorite-song-2-months-before-its-42863737.png
