Sound problems on dell laptop

I am certainly very happy with ubuntu as an os. Currently I am using the latest ubuntu 12.04 precise and it is by far the best os in the world. And btw, unity is awesome.

Now as with every thing, I have a small problem. I am getting no sound out of my laptop speakers. Sound is coming when I connect my earphones. I am giving below my laptop specs in detail. Kindly help me with this problem.

Model - Dell Inspiron 1545
OS - Ubuntu 12.04(fully updated)

Try opening a terminal (hold CTRL ALT and press T) then copy and paste

sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf &

You shoudl be prompted for your password, insert it (don't worry if the password does not appear as you are typing; type it then hit return, then copy and paste:

options snd-hda-intel model=generic.

Scroll to end of file and enterthis line

Save/close and save to etc (ckicj on etc in window and save)

Restart laptop
open alsamixer and make sure all speaker/pcm are not muted
play some music

If that doesn't work go back into file and change"= generic" to"= auto" (no quotes)

didn't work. tried both "generic" and "auto"

check if something is muted [MM] and un-mute it with "m" key . You can volume-up or down with arrow keys.

Were there any options before you entered these options?

Try and change it to ::: =m81

Restart
check alsamixer again
play some music
