True, Sputnik is only one of a number of foreign outlets to attract an outsized following in Turkey. See here (good read) https://twitter.com/ragipsoylu/status/1102582503641149440 … and here https://twitter.com/mahirboztepe/status/1102574653376262144 ….

The key distinction is this. In most countries where Sputnik operates, you’ll find very few politicians, academics, and journalists who trust it with their news. But you’ll find scores of them in Turkey.

Follower numbers of some other international news agencies in Turkey: BBC Turkey: 3 million DW Turkey: 281K and increasing VOA Turkey: 105K There are two reasons for this: 1-Twitter is very popular in Turkey. 2-Turks search for alternative news sources to pro-government outlets.

People are so sick of pro-gov't media they want to hear different news than what pro-gov't media pumps. People don't care if it's pro-russian, pro-western or pro-arabian as long as it's not pro-gov't.

You‘ll attest to a narrower and more meaningful correlation when analyzing percentages over adult population. Also, as elections participation will show as well, compared to western audiences, Turks are politically more engaged and more likely to follow such political outlets.

For comparison, BBC’s Turkish site has 3 million followers. I don’t mind some Russian propaganda sitting in the corner to challenge British propaganda on major world stories like Syria Iraq and Venezuela. Truth lies somewhere in between the two.

That is where the lack of press freedom brings one... combined with the absence of media literacy, it makes a whole nation open for any kind of conspiracy theory & propaganda.
