I assume this is why that section of the IHRA examples was reworded. It’s antisemitic to claim Jewish people, in general, are loyal to Israel, or that someone shills for Israel because they are Jewish. But if someone does shill for Israel, it’s fair to point that out.

We joke that John Woodcock is Rt Hon representative of Ankara because he shills for Erdogan, his ethnicity doesn’t come into it.

It’s why invoking a ‘trope’ seems a weak basis for judging someone to be racist. It’s racist to say jewish people, because they are Jews, have loyalty to Israel. But if someone describes how Israeli Embassy work with JLM (as shown in AJ doc) is that antisemitic?

Likewise when Wandsworth spoke of Smeeth’s relationship with rightwing media, he was accused of deploying a trope. But the left (rightly) say the same about a bunch of rightwing MPs, whatever their ethnic background.

Obviously sensitivity is needed. But it seems a weak conception of antisemitism if one can find out after the event that unbeknownst to them, the person who’s actions they called out, happens to be Jewish.

It also adds to sense felt by many Palestinians that purpose of IHRA is to cast suspicion on anyone that dares *describe* how Israel lobby functions. It’s why the clarifications in the NEC guidelines about “intent” are probably necessary.
