Welcome to the AirMessage subreddit! This post will contain general pointers for information about the software, how to get started, and where you can go from there.

Installing AirMessage

If you want to use iMessage on your Android phone, this would be the first step. For step-by-step instructions on setting everything up, take a look at the installation guide.

If you know what you're doing and would like to jump ahead, you can download the Android app here on Google Play, and the server app here from the AirMessage website.

Getting help

If you're having any issues with AirMessage, there are many resources available. For common questions, the AirMessage help page may have what you're looking for. It will be expanded as time goes on.

If you can't find what you're looking for there or have something more specific, you can make a post here on Reddit. Here, you can leverage the support of other community members, and work together to resolve the issue. I'll also be here to help out as well.

Finally, you also have the option of sending an email. You can send us a message at hello@airmessage.org, and we'll try to get back to you as quickly as possible.

Long time iPhone user here, looking to switch platforms, however, as Google seems to be leading the way with AI-based infrastructure.

Only thing that has kept me an Apple user is basically iMessage, therefore this would be a godsend for me.

But I am a little confused. If I have my primary phone # on my SIM card right now in my iPhone, and I take it out, and put it in my new, pre-ordered S10 (when it arrives), then I won't be on the iMessage servers anymore, as my phone # would then be on the new S10, and not the iPhone anymore.

Am I getting something wrong here?

Enjoying the app a lot. Would like to see this feature implemented.

I saw that the WeMessage app was taken down from the play store some time last week so I'm wondering if this is an updated version or if it was bought by another company?

Right now I'm noticing that deleting messages from AirMessage does not delete the actual message on iMessage, so it's a one-way delete. Will that two-way delete syncing be possible?

Thanks very much for creating the app and making it functional for us Android users!

Just out of curiosity. How does AM differ from the similar iMessage app on Android from a year or so ago, WeMessage?

Thanks!

I'm really interested in this project but would rather not run a closed source server open to the internet on my MacBook. Is there any source code we can view?

Didn't have any problems with the instructions. Good job with that. The server is running on a 2009 MacBook Pro OS 10.11.3.

However, my iPhone friends get two of every message that I send from my Pixel 3.

Hey Guys, would anyone have setup air message using the att router, I am stuck in the section where it is asking you to set up the port forwarding. Thx

AirMessage seems awesome so far! I've forwarded my ports, got DuckDNS going, everything works great.... when on 4G. If I try to use AirMessage while on my home WiFi, I encounter an issue with NAT Loopback... I can't hit the external IP/DuckDNS URL. Comcast routers don't support it.

Is there any way around this?

This allows you to discover a AirMessage server, without configuration

Hello all. I was wondering if there was a way to change how my friends receive my messages. As of right now when I message them, it will show that I sent it from my icloud account. Is there any way that I can make it appear as if it came from my phone number??? Thanks in advance.

UPDATE: Kinda solved with a different solution than i thought.

Do you have any plans to support this or make a guide? I do not own a mac or plan on doing so but I have a couple old iphones that I would like to run as servers. I think this will open doors for a lot more users who don't want to run server on a mac 24/7. Thanks!

Airmessage is working great but I have yet to move my sim card from my iphone to my android device. Right now, I'm still using my iPhone and using my Android phone basically as a wifi device. I've got Airmessage server running on my mac and everything is cool. I fully understand the limitations with Airmessage have everything to do with Apple's walled garden.

With that in mind, here's a question:

I assume that if I move my sim card from my iphone to my android device, then new imessages sent to my phone number will come in as SMS messages on whatever SMS app I'm using and will not come in over iMessage and therefore will not show up in Airmessage, is that right? I know I could use my iCloud for iMessage but most people message to a phone number. If that's the case, then it's not like I can use my SMS app for SMS messages and AirMessage for iMessages to iphone people, at least I can't transparently as if everything is coming from my phone number, is that right?

Just thinking through how this will work if and when I actually move over.

Thanks for all the hard work!

I keep getting a "an external error has occurred" when I try to send a message. Any idea what that's about?

Hello all. I was wondering if you would add I message games in the future?

One of my group messages came over with 5 or 6 people in the chat. I can see all the messages. I can't respond to the group though. I get an error that says your message could not be sent and that an external error occurred.

Essential PH1, using a wm density of 348 (stock is 480). + button removes the keyboard but does not pop up the picture menu.

Tested working in split screen.

First of all, thank you so much to the dev. I was previously on weMessage, which was usually sometimes but mostly wouldn't load messages and constantly disconnected. Here, it's like this isn't even running on my computer, and everything syncs perfectly! So thanks so many times to the selfless developer for working on this for so long and providing it free of charge!

A couple questions about features. One, any possibly of being able to add reactions to messages? I definitely like being able to see what other people react too really easily, but it definitely feels one sided when we can't do the same.

Again, this is a small ask, and you've already given us such an awesome app to use, so I'm content either way. Thanks so much again!

It would be fantastic if it supported sending them too :)

  1. My partner reports the messages I send arrive, but show as coming from my iCloud email address. Any idea how to rectify so phone shows or is this as designed?

  2. Are sending of photos supported? Currently this is not working for me - 'request timed out'.

Thanks much!

Matt

I saw a question from Cole on the Google + pages, asking if current AirMessge users thought the app was ready to go alpha, but didn't see any notification it actually went full alpha?

Is the app now freely available for any and all Android users?

I've been playing with this all day, definitely love what it could be eventually. I just have a few things I want to point out.

  1. Group messaging has been weird, not sure if it has to do with some of the group members running Android message. Can you send regular sms messages to non apple imessage users?

  2. Any plans on bringing the typing bubbles to air message so we know when the other person is typing.

  3. Any plans to give air message the ability to be the default messaging app?

Personally I won a Mac so I'm lucky enough to use this app. But for the people who don't it would be cool to open up a subscription service which is a server running on a Mac os VM to serve people. This is probably not the most efficient idea but I asked some Android users if they would pay for iMessage (subscription) and their answer was usually an yes at least in the United States. The pricing logistics will need to be worked to to see if this is feasible. RN this is just an idea.
