No I know my pt is an obvious one. I’m just saying we have a ‘toolkit’ to process civilian deaths in a war like WW2. This regime actually does view a huge chunk of its population as the architects of strategic bombing viewed citizens of imperial japan. Possibly worse actually.

Assad is not anti-Islamist but anti-Ikhwan, i.e. anti -Sunni- Islamists. It's a sectarian stance, not a secular one. His best pals are uber (Shia) Islamists

On Sunday, we'll be publishing a first analytical study on the logic underpinning the Syrian regime's systematic use of improvised chlorine bombs in particular. We take the broadest dataset compilable and break down tactical, operational, strategic patterns.

Unbelievable that ECFR argues that Samer Foz is not part of the regime, Marouta is just another neoliberal project and sanctions are the cause of civilian suffering. 1/2

There are few things more ludicrous and offensive than Egyptian religious institutions and state clerics—who have consistently and unapologetically offered theological justifications for repression and killing—having an international stage to trumpet "freedom" and "tolerance"

Interfaith has become a PR tool for Arab regimes. Simple as that. Such gestures don’t advance anything other than official image. As religious clerics (both Muslim & non-Muslims) associate themselves with autocrats, that even hurts legitimacy & message. The most basic of facts.

This is my latest. It took me over a year to wrap my head around the changes making the world seem unfamiliar--even unreal. The question posed is that of the hole in the middle: the poor politics that leave ever more space for the alternatives we dread
