Why oh why does everyone forget the poor Fatimids?
-
It's a Mamluk conspiracy
-
And were you counting the puppet Abbasids in exile under the Mamluks or did you go for 1258 as their terminus point?

The Abbasids reigned longer than the Ottomans? I never knew that.
-
750-1258 versus 1517-1924
-
Depends on where you look. For Iraq the dates are correct, for Egypt i beg to differ. Also, the Umayyads remained caliphs in Spain for much longer. And the Ottomans only emphasized their caliphate rather late. Maybe 19th century.

If we graphed this according to the suffering caused by each it might be a bit different. ISIS systematically murdered more people in just a few months in 2014 than I suppose more of the other "caliphates" did in years or decades or ever. Also cultural ruin under ISIS was awful.
-
I wouldn't even call that fake a Caliphate... It was a terrorist organistion using a religious pretext. (And supported by "Western Countries" as well)
-
The drawing is factually inaccurate. The ottoman ruled more the Abasyeen :)http://www.topsarabia.com/%D8%A7%D8%B7%D9%88%D9%84-10-%D8%B3%D9%84%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%A7%D8%AA-%D9%81%D9%8A-%D8%AA%D8%A7%D8%B1%D9%8A%D8%AE-%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%85%D8%B3%D9%84%D9%85%D9%8A%D9%86/ …

But not as a caliphate, which is what the graph is showing.

I think you should put that dot under the line.

You missed Fatimid
-
Their legitimacy is heavily disputed by majority, i would say :) Although fatimid state was no doubt fascinating.
-
That's what I think all the caliphates were about, Legitimacy, proving and disputing it. Each with its unique attempts of maintaining and proving their legitimacy.

Hey Karl, this chart is “technically” wrong as the so-called I.S. Does not, neither in concept not in principle, qualify as a caliphate
-
Why not?
-
Are you currently “ruled” by I.S. ?

Wait how is Ottoman's bar shorter than Abbasid's.
-
Abbasid lasted from 750 to 1258 or (as a puppet) to 1517. Ottoman: 1517 to 1920.
-
I dont think so. Ottoman was at the end of the 13th century. 1299 i think. And didnt Abbasid just end after Hulagu Khan's carnage?
-
Yes but Ottomans seized tittle of Khilafah from Mamluks after capturing Cairo in 1517. Also branch of Abbasids survived fall of Baghdad and found refuge in mamluk Cairo where they were Caliphs till Ottomans seized the title.
-
Ah. I didnt know that
-
Happy to help :)
