「鷹と鶯」 A hawk and a warbler
鶯が木の枝で歌を歌っていた。 A warbler sang a song on a twig.
鷹がその鶯を捕まえた。 A hawk caught the warbler.
鶯が言った、「私は小さいです。私を食べても、あなたはお腹が一杯になりません。どうか私を食べないでください。あなたはもっと大きいのを捕まえられます。」 The warbler said, "I am small. If you eat me, you can not be full. Please, don't eat me. You can catch bigger one."
鷹が答えた、「現実の価値あるものを失って、もっと価値あるが幻のものを求めるなら、私は愚かだ。」 The hawk replied, "If I lose a real valuable thing and seek illusional one that is more valuable, I am foolish."
かくて、鷹は鶯をあっという間に食べた。 Then the hawk ate the warbler at once.
教訓：君は今現実に手元にあるものを利用すべきだ。未来にもしかして手に入れられるものを希望すべきでない。 Lesson: You should use what you really have now. You should not hope what you can possibly have in the future.
《感想》
鷹は賢い。
「とらぬ狸の皮算用」で、手に入っていないものは、あてにならない。
手元に現実にあるものこそ、確かだ。
「明日の百より今日の五十」。明日の100両という不確かな話より、半分でも今日の現実の50両がよい。
“Better an egg today than a hen tomorrow.”今日の卵一個は、明日の鶏一羽に勝る。
