    There's literally no measure - political, economic, or social - on which is better under the clerics than it was under the Shah. And invoking Iran's Jews on this is the kind of gall one had come to expect from Zarif: Iranian Jewry voted with its feet on this revolution.

    One can see this in reverse: when Obama tried to get the Israel lobby to rally support for strikes against Asad in 2013, in that brief window when he was considering it, it went nowhere because public opinion was overwhelmingly against.

    Seems very relevant right now: a paper by (2011) on the reason(s) pro-Israel sentiment is so dominant in Congress. In short, it's because the American public is (alas for the hard-Left) overwhelmingly favourably disposed towards Israel.

    Khomeini's first PM, Mehdi Bazargan, who had so effectively misled the hapless US AMB Sullivan and steered him towards pushing the Shah out and trying to have the military come to terms with Khomeini, resigned over the Embassy seizure and by mid-1981 Banisadr, MEK were gone, too.
