Our latest investigation is out. We examined the 2015 killing of #TahirElçi, a prominent Kurdish human rights lawyer, in Diyarbakır, Turkey. Here's how we did it. Video on our website: https://www.forensic-architecture.org/case/killing-tahir-elci/ … Long-read over at @openDemocracy:https://www.opendemocracy.net/forensic-architecture/cgi-crime-scene-reconstruction-opens-new-leads-in-Tahir-El%C3%A7i-killing …

#TahirElci was shot during a press conference, at which he was appealing for calm in the city, after violence had erupted again between the Turkish state and the Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK. This is Elçi:pic.twitter.com/eJWCRCjsmW

Police opened fire when PKK militants ran through the scene, but Elçi was the only casualty. With accusations & conspiracies swirling & the official investigation stalled, the #Diyarbakir Bar Association, of which Elçi had been chairman, asked us to examine the case.pic.twitter.com/XXhkcE4YfR

We synchronised the available video footage, and counted the number of shots fired. Where possible, we identified who fired each one. Out of 40 shots, we could see that 26 were fired by the police.pic.twitter.com/zOOAM5IxYX

None of the available footage captured the moment when #Elçi was shot, however. To understand that moment, and to see which of those 40 shots could have hit Elçi, we would need to rebuild the scene as a digital model, using open source software from @blender_org.pic.twitter.com/xwZ5i5fyPQ

Within the model, we reconstructed the precise locations and body positions of the police officers and the militants at different moments during the scene.pic.twitter.com/hprBXqdDoQ

With these positions established, we could begin to ask: which shots could have killed Elçi?pic.twitter.com/KXnaD85xbY

At least 2 police officers had direct lines of fire toward #TahirElci when they fired their weapons. Here, 2 officers, following the PKK militant as he runs, turn their guns directly toward him.pic.twitter.com/o52iudfFKJ
