    Abducting members of a deserter's family is hardly a show of flexibility. It's a sign of desperation: young Kurds have fled or ducked for cover. There's a sizable drain from deserters. It shows the PKK/YPG's failure to address the issues of a lack of volunteers head on.

    If this is this really the U.S. exit strategy, it seems to focus on saving the YPG/PKK, which suggests more arms. As for geopolitics and addressing Iran's role in the region, note the order of priorities.
