Pompeo’s Egypt speech is a perfect fit for this piece I wrote recently: The winds are blowing in one direction in the region — autocrats see victory within reach, and that makes them erratic, blind & uncompromising.

Trump: “If there is going to be peace and legislation, there can't be war & investigation." Nancy Pelosi then started going through the papers, as if wondering this was off-script.

The problem with Trump’s “America First”: If the US is pursuing only its self-interest, why should other countries help us? And if other countries don’t help us, how can we achieve our national security objectives? My column:

If you want to have a different perspective on the Pope’s visit to the UAE, away from the misleading fluff, read this well-informed piece: “Pope Francis just made history by visiting the Arabian Peninsula. But was he a pawn?”

  7. Interfaith has become a PR tool for Arab regimes. Simple as that. Such gestures don’t advance anything other than official image. As religious clerics (both Muslim & non-Muslims) associate themselves with autocrats, that even hurts legitimacy & message. The most basic of facts.

Bold NYT editorial: “a decision to withdraw could prompt the Afghans, the Taliban and regional players like Pakistan, Russia, Iran, India and China to work together on a cooperative solution to stabilize Afghanistan and deny terrorists a regional base.”

Trump just jeopardized negotiations to keep a U.S. military contingent in Iraq and endangered the safety of the troops that are already there. It’s dangerous to have a president who does not know what he is talking about. My column:

Syria has the world’s worst immigration crisis. The US asks countries to pick up their citizens (ISIS fighters currently jailed by the SDF.) These foreign fighters with their organization came to Syria, ruined its uprising against Assad & maimed its people. They need to go!

Intriguing that, contrary to some expectations, ISIS foreign affiliates are generally becoming more like ISIS & more active after the defeat of the caliphate in Iraq & Syria than at the height of its strength there some years ago.

Four years ago today, ISIS released a horrific video showing the immolation of Jordanian pilot Muath al-Kasasbeh. I don’t think we’ll ever fully know the impact of that on many in the region. ISIS, for a moment at least, persuaded lots that the act was justified.
