At the beginning of 2017, I had the opportunity to help identify a list of possible developers in the Toronto-area to fill a position on the Engineering team of a startup I was working with at the time. To take a step back, I joined the team as a product designer during the last summer. This was much expected — I had worked as a product designer for several years and had recently graduated from the University of Waterloo with a degree in Digital Arts. What was “unexpected or unusual” was how I was hired, given I never actually applied to be a product designer with the company, and the company wasn’t looking for a product designer to join their team. So how did I join the team? I created my position in the company. And you can, too, by doing some strategic networking, pitching your skills and “creating your opportunity”. Fast forward sixteen months when I was selected to find and review potential candidates to fill the vacant position.
