@eal Amazing! Thank you!

This is a instance. It's got some bugs, but it looks like the platform is no longer being actively developed. It does not support Activity Pub, which will cause it to gradually de-federate as new services use the newer protocol. All the other GS instances are shutting down or moving to pleroma. I recruited a large handful of users to join this instance, but they didn't like the the UI and all but one wandered off. The pleroma interface is more desirable.
It's now officially on my to-do list to migrate. I'd hoped for a tool to migrate databases, but I don't think one was ever built (and I do want to learn dB programming, but I've got a few other projects right now.)

Robot update:

I am fairly sure I've actually ordered all the parts I'm going to need to control and inflate 8 tentacles. Well, not the pump yet... I can't find any appropriate pumps that individuals can put in the UK, so I've asked my uni to order one for me.

In other news, I'm fairly sure the valves are going to make loads of noise when the tentacles deflate.  I can deal with this by adding mufflers OR by making a bunch of helmholtz resonators.  Which will be slightly a pain in the bum because it semi-locks it to a particular tonality, although, I guess I could make them swappable.

@extraneous I love my fair phone, but the proximity detector doesn't work with Sonia's specs. It is otherwise, really, the only phone that meets all requirements. ....unless I do some DIY thing, which she will absolutely hate, even if it were to turn out to be the greatest phone ever made.

Something that you might not know about on here is that a lot of us pushed hard for this place to be dogpiling-free.

Ever since the influx of new users over the summer, that's been getting lost.

In before anime told who hate unions: I too want to work longer hours with less pay security and think Union-invented concepts like the weekend and adequate leisure for workers should be abolished. Working 16 hour days, 7 days a week will still leave motivated people plenty of time for video games
Hello members, please cast your ballots. Low turnout weakens our position considerably because it makes us look apathetic. It's better to vote no than not to vote. If you're not sure, flip a coin or vote no. If you'd strike, but don't want to do a marking boycott, then that's a legit way to vote!
We got a lot of momentum after last year's strike and of hate to see that fizzle away with unreturned ballots! It's so much better for us to be engaged, strikes or not.
Once upon a time, there were adverts in the tube system for a dating site that relied on live webcams. You would know what the other person actually looked like and be able to avoid the ugly and unkempt among us.
But the adverts used only two models. The 'avoid' man and the 'avoid' woman were the same models as the desirable people, but they'd just spent much more time grooming before sitting at their computers in the solitude of their empty homes.
Rarely do you see adverts actively promoting the flaws of a new product. Anyway, I suspect it didn't quite catch on, but I don't know. My dating site days are over.
@rysiek @aral @jalcine @humanetech @switchingsocial I agree and it's also important because scolding new arrivals is a great way to get them to leave. It alienates users and also works to establish power relationships based on experience and purity. This makes any platform worse for everyone. An atmosphere of welcome is more compelling for all kinds of users. Corporate platforms are the output of a faceless Borg. A human welcome is something they can't offer, but we can.
