You'll be around N3 level after 1-2 years of college-level courses, which is good enough for most things, although you will be looking up a lot of kanji if you do this.
Additional studying beyond that will make you faster and make translation easier. Translating novels, for instance, still wears me out after a few hours, and I need a break.
