My severe condolences to Zaush, who will probably now have to experience the inside of a US correctional facility, which are awful, inhumane places due to precisely the kind of right-wing tough-on-crime dickbags he shills for.

Actually, that's only if he's lucky. Prisons are full up already, so he's more likely to get life on probation, which, despite the freedom it implies, is actually worse. It's basically living in the outside world with no rights, no chance of employment, and $1k in fees/month.

It also gives the probation officers (the worst kind of cops) a direct line to take their aggression out on you. They can beat you and take your stuff at will. Meanwhile you have little to no protection from it. Prison protections don't apply. Ask me how I know all of this. :/

How do you know all of this?

I was being rhetorical because most people don't care, but nonetheless I appreciate the question. My fiancé was on lifetime probation for unknowingly committing a felony. She went through all of this, and her situation actually improved when she recently transferred to prison.

It messes up not only the offenders life, but the lives of friends, family, loved ones who have to uproot their lives to assist them. Probationers cannot leave the state where they were convicted, even if they never lived there in the first place. This is why most are abandoned.

All i recall from probation in my hometown was an individual named David Renz (federal CP charges) who tampered with his ankle bracelet some 20 times, they told him to step messing w/ it, he slipped it, raped a kid and murdered her guardian at a mall so...not a fan of prob for CP

After reading up on this, it appears there were a lot of moving parts in this tragedy. The biggest contributing factor was the neglect of law enforcement to acknowledge a threat to public safety, after being given more that 20 opportunities.

The issue is that the deciding factor for prison/probation is not severity of crime, but the capacity of prisons and the ability to house new inmates, which for most places is nil. Maybe if we didn't lock up so many PoC's for petty crimes, and prioritized dangerous criminals...
