Welcome to our weekly thread for troubleshooting and simple questions! Here, there is no such thing as a stupid question, so ask anything about skincare that’s on your mind.

Some examples include:

  • How can I address this skin concern?

  • What moisturizer, toner, etc. would you recommend for someone with my skin type and concerns?

  • How long should I wait after x product before continuing with my routine?

  • Is it okay to use x product in combination with y product?

  • What does x product do? Is it right for me?

Please remember to follow the sub rules and practice good reddiquette!

  • Talk Me Out Of (TMO): Feeling the urge to buy something you don't need? Let us talk you out of it!

  • What's In My Stash: What do you already have lying around that you might be able to use in lieu of a new product? How could you meet a skincare need/want using something you already have?

  • Reflection: How's your routine doing at the moment? How are you feeling about your no/low-buy trajectory right now? Has anything made it especially difficult or easy to stick to no/low-buy recently?

  • Use It Up: What are you trying to use up while you're going low/no buy? How's it going so far? Are you struggling to use up anything in your stash?

Is there anything special about their formulation that allows them to make such a claim?

Interesting they say to apply it to clean skin and to do your skincare routine AFTER applying the sunscreen (which they say has to bind to your bare skin) - what ingredient does this? What are they even talking about?

I have tried their products, and they’re fine, but my sunscreen love is Dr Jetske Ultee’s Suncare. Buuuuut I’m a mom/part time office worker and am only gonna apply once a day (unless sweating outside or st the pool).

If Ultrasun is really only once a day, I have to use it. If it’s not truly any better than Jetske Ultee, then might as well use what I like better

I am currently trying to fix my dehydrated skin. I’ve noticed that my skin feels much healthier, more hydrated and plump by mixing my hyaluronic acid serum, rosehip oil and a thin moisturizer in my hand and applying everything at once to my wet face, followed by an occlusive.

I don’t get such good results when I apply the same products seperately, even if I spritz water in between all of the steps.

What method works the best for you?

I am looking for recommendations from you lovely people for a (decently priced) morning moisturizer that layers well under sunscreen/makeup.

Currently I'm using CeraVe in the tub as my AM and PM moisturizer and found it doesnt layer well under sunscreen or makeup.

Skin type: acne-prone, dehydrated, have a lot of PIE/PIH

https://www.outsideonline.com/2380751/sunscreen-sun-exposure-skin-cancer-science

Kind of a long read, but I recommend reading it all.

Despite the opinion of most of the skincare subs, I’ve primarily used sunscreen a sunburn preventative. I used a moisturizer with sunscreen as a teen and young adult for my face, but never sun-screened my body unless in the sun for a prolonged period of time.

I tend to be a bit hippie-ish, so my rationale has been that as a species, we were meant to be outdoors. So it just felt wrong to deprive myself of the sun. I also know I feel better with sun exposure...happier, less stressed, clearer skin, etc.

So obviously it’s refreshing for me to read something that supports my view and bias, but I’m curious to hear what others think as well.

I was thinking about this comment in the SCA post about Shero stealing and lying. Seems like that Dreamline Ceuticals entity has its niche as selling skincare that can then be branded and put through Instagram/Facebook/Reddit magic to create brands with product lines and a social media following. There are so many of these little (or not so little if their marketing succeeds) indie brands and many of them have such a similar range of products, from "milky cleansers" to "C, E and Ferulic" serums. Now, of course the similarity in the ranges can be driven by the consumers wanting to see specific products, thus paying more attention to brands that offer them. Then again, consumers' wants generally aren't formed from consolidating brand-neutral research. The demand is created by the supply, if you will. So, how many of these brands truly offer unique, noteworthy formulations rather than putting labels (and perhaps minor modifications) on something made for the purpose of re-branding? It's undeniable that skincare is a booming business, sounds like a good way for people with money to invest to cash in on the trend.

Idk if this is just me, but online shopping can be a pain because of shipping times and extra packaging. Sometimes it's worth it, especially if you're replacing products you don't use regularly. But sometimes it would be nice to just pop into Target or CVS on the way home and have your product then and there.

If you could pick one product that you can currently only find online to be available locally, what would it be and why?

I have combination skin ( I think) , that is also sensitive. I am looking at kiehl products because of a recommendation but don't know what to buy. I currently just use Cetaphil daily wash . I do wet shaving and put Aftershave on my face every day as well. For more info early 30s Asian if that matters. Medium complexion?

I type this as I sit with my credit card ready to buy a full size bottle of Glossier Milky Jelly and for some reason it bothers me, but I'm going to do it anyway.

I can't tell if it's because I feel like I've fallen victim to Glossier's millenial-focused marketing schtick since I do, in fact, fit into the millennial category. And I don't like being marketed to.

Or maybe it's just at the end of the day I feel like it just shouldn't work for me. Like, it just doesn't make sense that something so girly and trendy works on my complicated skin?

Up until now I thought the only thing I could use on my face were Vanicream products and other super bare-boned things. I've tried a bunch of stuff over the past two years when my skin started to get bad, mostly things aimed towards sensitive skin. Free&Clear cleanser with Sebamed clear face gel became my standby routine and the only thing that didn't seem to prolong redness or cause more breakouts. I did start using Differin cleanser and gel two months ago, and once winter weather came the Free&Clear made my face start to feel way too dry.

Well, my friends, not with this stupid pink jelly. I purchased a travel size bottle about a month ago. Amazingly, it hasn't caused me to breakout like it seems almost every other thing out there causes me to. I use it in the morning as well as nights when I don't use Differin cleanser.

And my skin feels happy.

And I don't know why this is confusing for me. But I'll take it.

It seems like the more into skincare I get the more distressed I become about ingredients I know have the potential to be irritating for my sensitive skin. You know, the usual suspects: fragrance, alcohol, essential oils, most chemical sunscreens....I'm so annoyed that such a huge part of the market is closed off to people like me.

But another part of me has begun to wonder if I'm taking this too far. I recently tried a sample of a mask that I was really interested in, and later found out that it includes several essential oils as well as some fragrance, which I normally avoid like the plague. But here's the thing...it worked??.....really well for me. And it didn't feel like it was irritating my skin, but I have a lingering suspicion that because it has "bad" ingredients, it must be causing some damage! And I don't know whether that is the right line of thinking or if I'm going overboard.

Anyway I'm not sure if I'm the the only one frustrated by this and I was wondering what your thoughts were.

It's bound to happen to everyone, you buy something you end up hating for one reason or another. Do you return? Do you hate-pan?

Sometimes I get tired of all the technical talk in subs like SCA and just want to chat about the fun aspects of skincare! So, how do YOU utilize skincare as a way to relax, indulge, or pamper yourself? I wanna know!

Personally, masking is where it’s at for me. I love popping on a mask and taking a bath, or just watching Netflix. Some chocolate doesn’t hurt either!

Because I prefer to buy somewhat large sized products with a low price per ounce, I find that I decant a lot of things so they're in more manageable containers. I also love Vanicream but it has such pharmaceutical package design... Here are some of them: http://imgur.com/A5IBknW

I'm wondering if anyone has ideas to share about what they use? I'm sure some of you have more creative ideas than just buying containers new on Amazon, which is mostly what I do. Are there any skincare brands that come in containers that are fairly good for re-using?

Let's talk portable skincare! 2019 WILL be the year I get more organised, so I've ordered some airless pump containers to make my skincare work on the move!

I work 12-14hr night shifts so apply sunscreen at 5.30pm (when I wake up) and 5am ish. This meant I was washing my face 3+ times a day, often just with water and no moisturiser/toner as obviously my makeup bag was somewhere other than I was, as I'm disorganised and barely a person.

I'm working on getting a toner, moisturiser and sunscreen either in mini sizes or decanted, I'm happy with using water or toner before reapplying sunscreen at the minute as my skin is quite dry, but am open to using a cleanser in the summer when my skin becomes an oil slick again.

So what's in your handbag/backpack/whatever you use to carry your stuff around? What do you need on an average day, what's there just in case, are your expectations different for products that you use during the course of the day?

So, for example, I have redness around my nose on each side that I can’t get rid of (and I’ve never had acne there.) I also have redness on my forehead, where I have had acne. What products/methods have you all used to get rid of this? Or maybe things I should avoid?

I’m looking for a cruelty-free, reef-friendly sunscreen that isn’t too oily and doesn’t leave a white cast. Does it even exist?? What are your favorite sunscreens and why?

Edit: phrasing
