Olive Branch forces razed portions of a cemetery and a local shrine in western Afrin, early March, building a military outpost in its place. Thanks for assisting in the investigation

One aspect to watch going forward is how the influx of Turkish-backed fighters fleeing the recent HTS offensive will affect these dynamics (ie. it was just announced that prominent W. Aleppo group Zenki would be resettled in the area). (9/9)

This past week has been the ALF's most active, with 10 attacks claimed. This frequency resembles the previous July/Aug high points of the 'Afrin insurgency. As we pass the year anniversary of Op Olive Branch, TR/FSA have continued to fail to quell such attacks. (8/9)

Another aspect that differentiates this 'brand' from the GaZ and YPG insurgencies is the lack of the former's kidnapping/execution tactics as well as the grisly close range ambush videos posted in the past by both. Such videos drew criticism, including from YPG supporters. (7/9)

This differentiates them from the Ghadab al-Zaytoun/Wrath of Olives 'Afrin insurgency brand who only publish in Arabic. This points to GaZ's intended audience being TFSA fighters in an attempt to intimidate them, whereas the ALF and YPG brands try to reach int. audiences. (6/9)

This group is surely a rebranding of the YPG 'Afrin insurgency. Official YPG attacks have ceased since their appearance and the ALF publishes press releases in Eng/Ar/Tr/Ku reminiscent of those from the YPG press office. Their social media accounts are run in English. (5/9)

The ALF claims to have killed 66+ opp fighters and 3 Turkish soldiers, however this number is unsubstantiated and likely inflated. The last confirmed death of a TR soldier in the area occurred on Dec 13th, before their existence. The ALF has only reported 11 victims' names. (4/9)

While one or two of the ATGM strikes have been launched behind enemy lines, the rest have originated from the Tel Rifa'at area, such as this Dec 22 attack occurring within the vicinity of the Kiljibrin silos. (3/9) location:

During this period, the 'ALF' has claimed at least 24+ attacks, 10 of which are documented on video. The majority have occurred adjacent to the PYD-controlled Tel Rifa'at/Shahba region. Such attacks include raids, roadside IEDs and ATGM launches. (2/9) map of claimed attacks:

Zenki has reportedly reached an agreement with Turkey, which allows the former to have bases, operate in Efrin &receive support from Ankara. In exchange, the group leaders were removed and new leadership was appointed (i.e. Turkey has full control over it)

We can confirm a combined U.S. and Syrian partner force convoy was involved in an apparent VBIED attack today in Syria. There were no U.S. casualties. We will continue to review the situation and provide updates as appropriate.

Covington Catholic is a perfect fit for a NYT Feature on how Trump's message has resonated in this hardscrabble rural Kentucky high school riven with economic anxiety, except for its being located in a well-to-do suburb of Cincinnati and charging ten grand a year in tuition.
