The Art Institute of Pittsburgh Is Founded

1969

The Art Institutes system is established when Education Management Corporation buys The Art Institute of Pittsburgh.

2000

The Art Institutes expand by acquiring other art colleges, growing to around 20 campuses.

2010

The Art Institutes jumps from 30 locations in 2006 to 50 locations.

2011

The Art Institutes parent company EDMC is investigated and sued by the United States Department of Justice for illegal recruitment practices and the fraudulent receipt of 11 Billion of federal financial aid. The Department of Justice claimed The Art Institutes “created a 'boiler room' style sales culture and has made recruiting the sole focus of its compensation system.”

The Art Institute of Pittsburgh Is Founded

2013

A lawsuit is filed by a former employee, alleging that the company had provided the Department of Education with falsified information in order to make more students eligible to take out loans.

2015

EDMC announced the closure of 15 Art Institute campuses, affecting 5,432 students.

2015

In November, the Justice Department announced that EDMC will be required to pay around $95.5 Million to settle claims against them regarding illegal recruiting techniques and high-pressure tactics to enroll new students in the schools. The company is also required to forgive $102.9 million in student loans.

During the most recent lawsuit, the Art Institutes must pay $95.5 Million and forgive an additional $102.9 Million in Student Loans
