[Routine Help] Low-maintenance minimal product routine for men?

Hi everyone, I hope this is the right sub for this! I've already learned a lot of useful info from searching so thank you :)

Every year, during hockey season, my boyfriend gets really bad breakouts from sweating, playing games, and being on the road often - and the winter weather here in Canada gives him super dry skin. He's been feeling pretty down about it and insecure about going out lately, so I would really appreciate your help! Currently his breakouts are primarily both cheeks and some on his forehead (and as many times as I tell him not to pick them, he does so we have scars to deal with too now). Do you guys have any recommendations for quick, minimal effort skincare routines? Especially for stubborn men who think wetting their face in the shower is fine lol.

I have very little knowledge of skincare other than the basics I only deal with occasional pimples I either leave alone or use a sulphur spot treatment for, but I imagine that wouldn't be healthy for both cheeks and forehead on his already flaky skin? I've gotten him to enjoy the Mario Badescu Rose Water Spray and vaseline for his lips so he's trying to be consistent with that.

Thank you in advance!

I know nothing about ice hockey but I wonder if his helmet could be contributing to his acne. Might be worth seeing if you can get something to go inside the helmet to protect his skin which you can wash after each match.

For routine, maybe something like Cetaphil face wash plus Cerave moisturiser. Those are effective products which aren't fussy or girly.

Just plain washing out the helmet might make a big difference if he’s been doing a mediocre job of it. Could have some acne related cultures growing in it right now that are being washed down onto his face by hair sweat.

Wow thank you both, we hadn’t thought of this! Will be doing a thorough wash asap

Checking out the helmet situation is a good idea and starting with a simple face wash and maybe moisturizer is probably plenty. I really like the Cera Ve hydrating cleanser which you can get almost anywhere now and Cera Ve makes a lot of great moisturizers as well that maybe he could try one. My boyfriend likes the cleanser because it feels like you've done nothing (aka not stripped all of the good oils off your face) and only very rarely reaches for my moisturizer.

Thanks! Do you know if Cere Ve has hydrating face wipes/makeup wipes? I’m thinking putting a pack in his duffel bag would be beneficial

I don't know but I have gotten a travel size of the face wash which I honestly think is better than wipes. I usually find wipes irritating.

Gold Bond Ultimates Men's Lotion is an excellent all around moisturiser for face/hands/body with an excellent ingredients list (and a whopping 10% urea).

Also a 5* review on Beautypedia.

I say a good cleanser for general use and to wash after hockey. A micellar could be carried easily but requires cotton wipes. There are cleanser recs on the side. I think some moisturizer used wet skin or with hydratoring toners (but do men like that). Asian toners are hydrating or something like Neutrogena Hydro Boost and then vaseline it at night. That be a start. Sulphur is drying. Pimple patches are good to suck out the gunk. Maybe once get moisturization down a BHA.

Sunscreen is always good but requires more cleansing at night. An oil cleanser is good. There are recs for those too here I believe.

Cleanser and Vaseline used wet be start. But something with humectants (glycerin, hyaluronic acid) used first on wet skin be good.

Thank you! Which pimple patches would you recommend?

I would always start with the basic ScA routine (from the sidebar) and then slowly add other products. Sometimes its absolutely enough to just start a proper routine so Im not a big fan of going immediately with the actives!

There are a bunch of good recs above, so all I'll add is this - make sure he always washes his face after hockey!!! Or anytime he sweats. A good, non drying cleanser, and maybe a microfiber facial wash cloth can do wonders, especially right after he comes off the ice, and before he gets home. And since he's doing the Rose Water, apply afterwards, then moisturize.
