[Acne] Men, sterilize your face razor

For the longest time I was complacent about acne on my jawline. I just assumed it was genetic, or hair follicles causing it, and just lived with it. I was only washing my razor with hot water. I didn't realize it was festering with bacteria. Then I started soaking my razor in alcohol overnight and my acne problems basically vanished. I wish someone had told me sooner.

I do this to my boyfriends beard trimmer! He hadn’t cleaned it in 3 years before I came along.

I am just now having this convo with my boyfriend about his! How do you go about sterilization for the trimmer? Any tips? It’s kind of a clunky device.

level 3

I wipe it down once a day (when I’m doing my night routine) with alcohol and then soak the blades in medical grade alcohol once a month.

level 3

I just wipe my beard trimmer with an alcohol swab each time before I use it

Polycystic ovary syndrome

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a set of symptoms due to elevated androgens (male hormones) in females. Signs and symptoms of PCOS include irregular or no menstrual periods, heavy periods, excess body and facial hair, acne, pelvic pain, difficulty getting pregnant, and patches of thick, darker, velvety skin. Associated conditions include type 2 diabetes, obesity, obstructive sleep apnea, heart disease, mood disorders, and endometrial cancer.

PCOS is due to a combination of genetic and environmental factors.

I would try a double-edged razor but it looks sooo sharp, I'm scared of cutting myself. Also, do you notice a difference in irritation when you shave with the grain/ against it? Also, does going over the same spot more than once actually increase the chance of bumps in your opinion?

level 3

I have shaky hands most days and the only times ive nicked myself with a DE Razor was when I wasnt fully paying attention. Having a good lather from the shaving soap will also determine how much you can go over a spot. Usually I go over my chin 4 times since it grows pretty thick yet I dont get problems from that. My skin is pretty sensitive.

"You're less likely to cut yourself with a sharp knife than a dull one"

That really applies here, you're very gentle with the razor instead and that plus a single blade rather than multiple is far less damaging and irritating to your skin.

Also don't forget that they are called safety razors, a name that seems to hold up quite well.

If you want a recommendation on a decent, cheaper, option to get started then the standard suggestion is the Merkur 34c. Soap and brush varies and isn't neccesary but you can usually buy a stick of arko soap with a 100 pack of very high quality Astra Platinim blades, so that may be worth checking out.

I have been using one of these razors for my legs and underarms for years and have never cut myself, but I would always cut myself with disposables. You don’t have to push down as hard, so they just glide over the skin

level 2

I’ve been on the fence about trying this on my legs, and I think you’ve convinced me. Thank you for the thoughtful and informed post!

I use one on my legs. I really like it. I don't use the fancy shaving soaps, I use alba botanica very emollient cream shave and it works fine. I was worried at first as well because they had YouTube videos on how to do it, but honestly it's not that different from a disposable, just have to use a lighter touch.

(Hugs to all women who are dealing with unwanted facial hair. Your gender is not affected by the amount of hair you have on your face, and neither is your beauty, or your worth as a person, or anything.)

Thank you so much for this. I really, really needed to hear this. You're awesome.

My armpits are SO SMOOTH now since I made the switch. No more angry bumps and ingrown hairs. Still get some on my legs but they're easier to manage and I know it's because I tend to rush shaving my legs.

FYI, this tip goes to women as well.

Shave my jaw line (thank you PCOS) and I also realized that having old or dirty razors = more prone to pimples.

I suppose it could also be applied to body razors? Especially if you go down under.
