    6. Is the U.S. supposed to make decisions only out of fear of somehow accruing prestige to Iran? Is the U.S. meant to permanently, illegally occupy 30 percent of a hostile country – wrecking the U.S.-Turkish alliance in the process – just so it looks more “reliable” than Iran?

    5. On counter-Iran: Sure, officials justified the U.S. presence in these terms, and articulated this goal. But was it achievable? How did an open-ended U.S. deployment realistically accomplish these aims? Why is the U.S. bound by these officials’ suspect assertions?

    2. It’s true, ISIS is not yet defeated. At the same time, it’s impossible to take these U.S. officials’ pre-Trump decision statements about progress against ISIS at face value. They were trying to strike a balance: between a) taking political credit (justifiably) for victory...
