Day 1 Narrative: "SDF is a multi-ethnic coalition with local legitimacy" Day 2 Narrative: "Trump abandons Kurds!" One of these is an over-simplification. Im actually at a loss at this point over which one it is.

US withdrawal doesn’t put SDF in danger, it puts YPG which is a part of SDF in danger, and Turkey might even cooperate with non-Kurdish elements within SDF to cleanse the Kurds in N-Syria. So the two statements do not contradict each other.

Thank you. I did not say they contradicted one another but that one of this was an oversimplification. I think what you're saying (which makes sense) means the more salient reality is the Kurdish element, meaning the first statement is technically true but ultimately irrelevant.

The reason this jumped out at me is that the public communications focus on the multi-ethnic aspect of the SDF, but ultimately the issue is understood through the prism of the Turkish-Kurdish conflict and it took for little for the discourse to switch.

And not to belabor the point but if you are an arab working with the American government you have plenty to worry about if the US withdraws, even if it’s not Turkish violence.

You’re right but Arabs in N-Syria have more options than Kurds. They can work it out with Turks based on their sectarian identity, or work with Damascus based on thier ethnic identity. But Kurds are the unlucky ones here; Turkey’s dogmatism leaves Kurds with almost no choice

Weird tweet. Very easy to understand. SDF is a Kurdish led multi-ethnic group. The majority are Kurdish though. All support given to the YPG and SDF gone. As a whole “the Kurds” have been abandoned as they led the forces which allowed for the multi ethnic alliance.

I appreciate your tolerating the weird tweet and replying. No I don’t think that clarifies it but there’s a good convo in this thread that did the job.

the second narrative is a simplification but that most saying it in all fairness also mean to include our Arab allies in the NE as well

I always thought it was to draw the historical continuity with Iraq etc. in which case it’s the opposite of what you’re saying. But if you’re right then dropping all ethnic references is an elegant solution

I would amend day 1 narrative "SDF is dominated by the Syrian branch of the PKK but is the least bad option in the eyes of many civilians, including non-Kurds because other forces are even more oppressive & corrupt." That's as close to "legitimacy" as one can get these days.

Both are incorrect. There is no such thing as “SDF”, it’s just a fake name for PKK( https://twitter.com/wyvernreports/status/888503007960322049?s=21 … )As a specific group, US,EU,UK-designated terror org PKK which deliberately targets, suicide bombs civilians is not Kurds.
