My analysis of the U.S. withdrawal from debacle: in short, this is also an issue of having pushed unrealistic goals without addressing real problems on the ground- all while sidestepping presidential and public oversight

Putin and Xi can act with impunity on the international stage because they do not rely on the support of other governments. The reason MbS cannot do the same, writes F. Gregory Gause III, is that Saudi Arabia is not a great power.

If the gains won by Kurdish and Arab sacrifice in Syria completely depend on continued U.S. military presence, then they were illusory to begin with. | Commentary by Nate Christiansen

Day 1 Narrative: "SDF is a multi-ethnic coalition with local legitimacy" Day 2 Narrative: "Trump abandons Kurds!" One of these is an over-simplification. Im actually at a loss at this point over which one it is.

There's something to this argument. At any rate, as far as I can tell there is not much to the "Turkey is now screwed" argument.

Well if one of Putin’s adversaries says he isn’t happy, then that must be true even if he says he is.

Regarding potential SECDEFs the traditional conservative FP bench are all Iran hawks, which means they’d side with Mattis on Syria. So that rules out the likes of Cotton/Keane. I’d guess Trump goes to a corporate background, or maybe a China hawk. Amb. Harry Harris perhaps?

    1. The Syria announcement + Mattis resignation could be the start of a much bigger/scarier shift in Trump’s foreign policy. All of the crazy campaign promises he made in 2016 but has yet to fulfill might now be starting

My thoughts on It caught the Washington-establishment and part of his administration by surprise. Unfortunately, it shouldn’t have. Trump has been consistent on his opposition to a long-term US military presence in Syria. 1/

Wow, this is unprecedented in war against terrorism. Trump withdrawal from Syria will end air campaign against ISIS (group is still active in NE Syria). White House has not confirmed, but this is well sourced piece from Pentagon:

I’m not privy to any special info but I’m deeply skeptical about efforts to reverse Trump’s Syria decision. I think he’s enjoying the outrage. The harder you push someone like that, the more rigid they are. Sort of like this stuff!
