    Brett McGurk, who I do not know, was appointed by President Obama in 2015. Was supposed to leave in February but he just resigned prior to leaving. Grandstander? The Fake News is making such a big deal about this nothing event!

    There's something to this argument. At any rate, as far as I can tell there is not much to the "Turkey is now screwed" argument.

    Two fundamentals in this piece— having real power in Syria, and U.S. gone means will struggle to face Moscow alone—are exactly wrong, IMHO. The bonds of RU-TR common interest have just been severed and the Kremlin now has to worry about TR.

    Regarding potential SECDEFs the traditional conservative FP bench are all Iran hawks, which means they’d side with Mattis on Syria. So that rules out the likes of Cotton/Keane. I’d guess Trump goes to a corporate background, or maybe a China hawk. Amb. Harry Harris perhaps?

    I’m not privy to any special info but I’m deeply skeptical about efforts to reverse Trump’s Syria decision. I think he’s enjoying the outrage. The harder you push someone like that, the more rigid they are. Sort of like this stuff!
