    Okay my 100 foot take on the "how" of removing US forces from Syria. FTR: this would be akin to how a McDonald's store manager would plan if told the cooperation was shutting down operation. I will not speak to aspects that are out of my lane, or "above my pay grade" 1/

    I would tell my Marines that until they hear from command to act, and plan as if we are still on mission for the full duration of the deployment. And to communicate the same down stream the ranks. 2/

    Not to mention not giving guys on the ground a chance to prepare to do this in an orderly way makes it more likely that some equipment gets left behind or just destroyed because the logistics of withdrawing haven’t been put in place.

    This was one of my first thoughts. Recklessly announcing this on twitter with no groundwork and preparation just significantly raised the threat of insider attacks to troops on the ground. Because the partner forces will be um, “disgruntled” about being left to die on the vine.

    US military source: "the biggest concern is SDF who are disgruntled. Remember the SDF guard all the US bases in Syria." Also says "not sure this was supposed to have been put out yet [...] news [of the withdrawal] came out publicly at the same time it came out securely"

    1. Today, President Trump declared ISIS “defeated” in Syria and signaled that he might begin the drawdown of American troops stationed there. Follow along for a walk down memory lane, starting with the last time ISIS was declared vanquished.

    We have defeated ISIS in Syria, my only reason for being there during the Trump Presidency.

    This was our suggested plan for Syria—US troops would be replaced by an Arab force that would prevent Iran’s land-bridge. I hope today’s news of withdrawal doesn’t make it harder, but I fear it will.

    There are so many reasons this is a bad idea it’s impossible to name them all. I’m pretty non-interventionist normally, but the timing/facts of this situation make an immediate and complete withdrawal a disaster. Fin/

    Abandoning Kurds in NE Syria has several effects, all very bad. Without Kurdish/US control of the area, that foreign fighter smuggling pipeline in NE Syria reopens. We break faith with the Kurds *again* and do lasting damage to our credibility. And give ISIS/Turkey free reign. 4/

    This leaves the Kurds in Northeastern Syria out to dry. Pretty evident that Turkey will begin offensives against them the moment they are no longer partnering with the US. And if Turkey doesn’t hold all of that territory, ISIS potentially will take some of it. 3/

    Okay, a few thoughts on Syria. Bottom line is that this is a disaster of a decision. No other way around it. Syria became a no-win situation when the previous admin invited Russia in. But there's no reason to now compound that mistake and/or not mitigate it. 1/
