  8. 1) “Amaq” uses semi-neutral terms, like “the Syrian regime” rather than “the Nusayris, or SDF rather than the “Kurdish infidels”, unlike other outlets 2) ISIS calls al-Qaeda outside Syraq “apostate” literally everywhere else. 🤷‍♂️

  11. For context, ISIS internal report was meant to be alarmist about this current & its dangers. Yet it concluded the internal threat has been contained & is minor, but that it’s important to keep an eye on it. An example of the danger of following complex issues online.

    An example of commentary I see coming up but exaggerated, even refuted by ISIS internal docs, is the so-called internal division within ISIS. From the outside, it sounds interesting & enticing, but it’s grossly inflated & misconstrued. Here is what ISIS says about the current:

    There is clarity today & we all should really use that to avoid repeat of the same bad analysis: Much of the literature produced about ISIS early on proved to be more interesting than useful (apocalypse, use of Twitter etc) compared to complex/local issues that’ll remain central
