A Noted Historian, Mushirul Hasan Passes Away
A noted Historian who has written on Partition of India, communal ism, and on the histories of Islam in south Asia, passed away on Monday at the age of 71. He was an alumnus of Aligarh Muslim University and Cambridge university. He also served as a pro vice chancellor of Jamia Milia Islamia between 1992-96 and later he became the vice chancellor between 2004-09. In 2010 he was appointed as the Director General of the national Archives of India, and also elected as the President of the Indian History Congress in 2002. He was given Padma Shri award for his writing on “Partition of India”. He has also held in the past academic positions at (Institute of Advance Study) in Berlin. He won many awards during his career and has written many books. Mushirul Hasan, who has been known for his contribution to social sciences was also the former Vice-Chairman, Indian Institute of Advanced Study, Former president of Indo-Iran Society in Iran Embassy and among numerous other posts he held in his illustrious career.
Mr.Mushirul Hasan’s health started declining after he met with a severe road accident in 2014.
He was famous for his book “When Store walls Cry”, in this book Mr. Mushirul Hasan presents the unknown facets of prison life of Jawahar Nehru and how that transformed their vision and characters. He documents how Jawaharlal Nehru decided to guide India on to the world stage as a modern nation, contrary to MahatmamGandhi’s Imagination of Hind Swaraj.
“In his condolence message CPI (M) chief Sitaram Yechury said “A Historian, A Teacher, A Vice-Chancellor, An Archivist: Mushir Ul Hasan blended all fine qualities of our syncretic culture and scholarship. His work and his books continue to shape our consciousness.”
Hasan’s namaz-e Janaza will take be performed at 1 PM at Babul IIm and at 2pm at Jamia Mosque. The burial will take place at the Jamia Graveyard.
