Baby Boomers vs Millennials

Baby Boomers vs Millennials

"I'm Gen X. I've been dealing with baby boomers for 40+ years and I also have had the great fortune to spend a good deal of quality time with Millenials. Obviously I spend time with members of my own generation, and we're awesome and nobody's arguing that, and I have the flu today so here are my thoughts about the boomer/Millenial gap.

Millenials tend to be grounded in technology in a way that is a little intimidating to older folks, and a lot of older people take it as rejection, or something like that.

Millenials realize that they're fucked financially. My generation took a long time to come to this realization, because it wasn't apparent when we were young.

The Millenials I know have very strong social consciences. Not to say that I agree with all of them, but they actually do think about the greater good.

Millenials are inclusive. They want things to be better for everyone. Yes, they participate in social media which can unfortunately be a narcissistic endeavor, but the narcissism of the average Millenial is dwarfed by that of the average boomer.

Boomers are the first generation that I know of that are actively working to leave the generations behind them worse off than they were.

Boomers blame their shit on other people.

Boomers hoard their wealth. My parents are spending their retirement blowing through their savings and racking up debt while collecting a government pension and artificially inflating the housing market. My grandparents did not do this, neither did my great grandparents. They worked very hard to leave something for their children.

Boomers do not mentor. In fact, they seem to have very little regard for, if not outright animus toward, the young. They hoard their expertise like they hoard their possessions, thinking only of themselves. This is not how it used to be, and not how it should be.

Boomers identify as young and they are no longer young. I don't remember my grandparents' generation shoving botox and fillers into their faces. I do remember my boomer relatives freaking the fuck out when my hair started to show some gray in my 30s. How dare I not dye it, who was I to remind them of their own mortality.

Boomers left their parents in nursing homes without much thought. Now that they are becoming very old, boomers also post shit on facebook like "we didn't leave you when you were young, don't abandon us when we're old." Like, fuck off with that shit right now. We cannot abide by that double standard, and we won't. We NEED to think about the young. They fucking need all the resources we can muster.

Sorry for the rant, but fuck boomers, man. Let's work together so that just maybe, Generation Z can have a better future than what these narcissistic fucks left us."
