What are some fragrances released by brands that don’t otherwise do perfume?

Today I found out Nivea released two EDT (one for women, one for men) that are meant to smell just like the Nivea lotion. I picked up the EDT for women and I can confirm, it’s Nivea’s original lotion in a bottle!

This got me wondering if there are other brands that do this?

I think it’s weird that some car companies make colognes

I drive a Mustang so I'm always tempted to get the $12ish Mustang one at Marshall's, but I just know it'll be wet ass.

I drive an Impreza, so I'm tempted to wear Aventus whenever I go out. Nothing but the best for my finisher car.

Mercedes Benz make a few

lol really? That's hilarious given what an un-aspirational brand they are in much of the world. It'd be like Eau de Toyota.

I just checked and I way underestimated the ‘few’ I’ve seen - they’ve released 28, 20 of which have the name ‘Mercedes Benz’ in the title.

level 5

Apparently they have a few decent/good ones. I don't remember the names though.

I was actually walking through our local Dillard's and saw one of them on display. Didn't try it.

I am a little curious what the Bentley fragrances smell like, though.

e.g. Ferrari... they are cheap and ok, but why

cheap and ok, but why

You clearly didn't test their Essence collection.

It's pricier but it's a very good collection with excellent performance overall.

I tried the Oud Essence & Cedar Essence & both impressed me very well.

Also, Neroli Essence is 4711/Neroli Portofino dupe.

level 4

Bright Neroli = NP

People who like ferrari but can’t afford their cars will often buy all of the other products of theirs they can. Keychains, hats, cups; cologne is no different

That is so true. Like a fan of the brand wants to rep the stuff but doesn't have the car

lol Nivea finally caught on. I remember from many years ago, a perfumista who was obsessed with the smell of Nivea lotion. We collectively broke our brains over the notes and possible dupes. Nothing much came of it.

One brand that springs to mind is Mont Blanc - a pen manufacturer.

I never knew I needed this until I saw it, but now I wish a couple of other brands would follow suit! I’d spend a pretty penny to have that classic Garnier Fructis smell in a bottle!

Similarly, Victorinox, maker of the Swiss Army Knife, has a few different EdTs

Both brands also make watches and stuff which makes it slightly less weird.

Oribé came out with their perfume that smells like their hair products after because customer demand was so high.

Glossier makeup did one called glossier you. I like it more than I thought I would.

level 2

A woman I work with wears that and every time she walks by it makes me want it. It smells so good!

level 3

I like to kind of layer it, I put a spray of that on each wrist, then whatever else I’m wearing I spray on my chest. It’s not super strong, but throughout the day I’ll smell it all of a sudden. I don’t know if it really does smell extremely different on everyone, but I like it.

Scotch and Soda have a great one with mass appeal and a decent price tag: Barfly.

level 1

I'll throw in a weird one. There's a makeup brand called Physicians Formula that put out a bronzing powder that smelled really tropical and coconutty. Users loved the scent so much they requested it be made available in wearable form. The company put out a special edition bottle of it based on demand. It was total garbage quality, basically like a Victoria's Secret fragrance spray, but I thought the origin story was cool.

level 2

I bought the Physician’s Formula perfume! I LOVE the smell of Butter Bronzer. I think the perfume is nice! It doesn’t smell exactly like the bronzer, but it’s close enough. It’s an EDT but it lasted 9 hours on me! I just wish the bottle were bigger. Only 15 mL. I don’t get why they were so stingy lol.

I wish more brands would do this! There’s so many beauty/skincare/hair care products I use that I love the scent of.

level 3

I found out the other day that the maker of my conditioner also makes a little rollerball with the same scent.

Zippo cologne, Street fighter cologne, Bentley Cologne, and GM cologne...

Bombay Sapphire made a fragrance smelling of gin. I don’t think it’s in production anymore, sadly.

In The Netherlands we have Zwitsal as our most known (baby) oil brand. They produce baby oil with a nice scent. They made an EDT with the exact same scent as the baby oil.

Coach, the leather and handbag company, sells spray fragrances. I often wonder if there is any relation to the purses or if they are cashing in on the Coach brand.

level 2
8 points · 23 hours ago

They have precedent: the leather goods company, Hérmes—they’re now considered one of the best designer houses.

level 2

Seemed out of nowhere when I first saw them but I quite like Coach for men

level 2

? Coach is Coach! Just like Michael Kors fragrance line is a facet of the brand. Do you mean Coach selling their name to a separate company for the perfume line? Sorry I'm confused.

Charlotte Tilbury has a fragrance called Scent of a Dream. I own it, but I'm still undecided on it. It's very heavy, but I feel that it fits well with her brand's image.

Lalique, not sure when they released their first fragrance, but I doubt it was more than 25 years ago. However, they've been a glass company since 1905.

Also Salvadore Dali perfumes really was started by Salvadore Dali.

Any "car company" fragrances

level 2

Honestly, the Ferrari frags are great for the price. The lavender one especially.

level 1

Ouai, the haircare company just came out with a few that are actually quite nice! Zadig and Voltaire (clothing company) have a few as well, but I really love This Is Her, it’s a fresh but almost smokey smell at the same time. Really amazing, and definitely my next purchase!

level 2

This is him is great too!

level 1

Tiffany comes to mind.

level 2

And, of course, Cartier... of course Cartier is actually very well-known (and well-regarded?) for some of their fragrances.

level 3

Cartier has so many fragrances and flankers that I’d say they don’t qualify for this. They’ve been making fragrance for nearly 40 years and have close to a hundred scents in their library.

level 4

True, but they've been around (as jewelers) since 1847 and only started doing fragrances in 1981. 37 years as a perfume house vs. 171 as a jeweler. Another way of putting it is that they didn't do fragrances for the first ~80% of their history. I'm saying Cartier counts. :P

P.S. I'm older than Cartier's fragrance business, so get off my lawn! ;)

level 5

I’m older than their fragrances too, so stay off my lawn.

But to reduce Cartier to just jewelry is a mistake. They’re so much more. Take a look into their history and you’ll discover they actually do quite a bit. Everything from famous clocks to clothing to leather goods to eye glasses to very fancy pens. I attended an exhibition on them years ago that was incredible. I saw solid gold business cards and bodices created for royalty.

level 2

I just splashed on some Tiffany For Men.

The other car brands are already named but Fiat has the 500 perfume! And it's actually a bit of a gem in my opinion.

I now know that Dunhill has their hands in a lot of things but when I first saw that they do perfume too I was surprised, seeing as my cousin smokes Dunhill cigarettes sometimes and that's where I learnt of the company.

Artisan grooming/shaving supply companies have been releasing EdT's and EdP's. Many of them at old school powerhouse strength, since they're not released in the EU (no IFRA compliance necessary).

Not just US companies either; I've read Geo F. Trumpers' (UK) Eucris EdP is quite the beastly oakmoss bomb.

level 2

Wait. The EU has regulations on how strong a fragrance can be?

level 3

It's not about the strength of a scent per se, but about limiting the content of certain ingredients in a fragrance, which then has implications on how strong a scent can be.

It's about the potential of ingredients to be irritants to some people. In other cases certain ingredients have been found to be straight up carcinogens.

If a scent can't have the same amount of oakmoss in it as previously, or any nitromusks, then they simply can't perform the same as before. Unless new aromachemicals are found that can be a slot-in replacement without the nasty side. There is now oakmoss with the offending molecule drastically reduced or eliminated, but it would seem it's not a fully solved problem yet.

MAC did a set of fragrances named after some of their best-known/best-selling lipstick shades recently (like within the last few years, alhtough I'm not sure they're some are still for sale). It's a cute concept but the execution must have been underwhelming because I didn't see much chatter about them.

Besame is known for their vintage-replication cosmetics but they've also released fragrances inspired by several decades of the 1900's. I don't know anything about the history of perfume, so I have no idea how true the fragrances are to their respective inspirations. I'd love to read a review from anyone knowledgeable! TBH, I'd love a review of just the scent descriptions from anyone knowledgeable. Most of Besame's products are casually limited editions (it's a smaller company so there has to be enough demand for them to keep producing any given product vs putting out something new that will sell better), so I suspect that all the fragrances will be discontinued in the near future.

A couple of the MAC scents are very similar to Tom Ford private blends. I bought 1 for my partner for Xmas last year.

Adidas do some. They had 1 that came out the other year that looked like their winged sneakers.

Oh god, please let Jergens do a similar thing with their original cherry almond scent! I love that, it’s such a nostalgic scent for me.
