    Syria and Lebanon register people by cities, villages, towns, et al. The mukhtar has the written records. So I don’t really know how this would work. I’ve heard rumors of Afghan Hazara receiving Iranian citizenship, but never Syria.

    Yes, the sourcing should have been an immediate red flag here. From what I gather from e.g. Afghans and Iraqis in Damascus, Syrian citizenship is not desirable for reasons such as dislike of compulsory military service

    Wow. regime naturalizes 1000s of Shi’a fighters. AFAIK first time that such blatant demographic change policy used by regime, at least since 1960s denaturalization of 100s of 1000s of Kurds. This is a big deal.
