This is one position from one FDD expert. At we have had a robust internal debate on this complicated issue with many views, as there should be at a think tank. See here for a selection:

  4. I could go on. But I have an actual Turkey to baste. Bottom line: let’s dispense with the notion that Turkey is an indispensable US ally. It’s a deeply, deeply problematic one. Maybe not an ally at all. That’s all for my Turkey Day rant. Happy Thanksgiving to all.

  5. Recently, Turkey has been cast as the protagonist in the Khashoggi affair. Of course, Turkey shared evidence of the Saudi journalist’s murder. But let’s not pretend Ankara is the hero here. They are the most prolific jailers of journalists in the world.

  7. And speaking of behavior unbefitting a NATO ally: let’s not forget how the regime has engaged in hostage diplomacy. The case of Pastor Andrew Brunson is the most famous. But as my colleagues note, there are many more.

  8. Then there’s question of Turkey’s support for jihadi networks operating in Syria. Reports suggest that there has been some improvement in recent years. But no NATO ally should do this in the first place.

  11. Arouri was finally designated as a terrorist by the US government in 2015. Our rewards for justice program also just put a $5 million bounty on him. Reports suggest Arouri is operating in Lebanon but still travels to Turkey.

  12. The top Hamas terrorist in Turkey, Salih Arouri, planned and financed the kidnapping and killing of 3 West Bank teens in 2014. That led to a 51 day rocket war.

  13. As I learned during my time as a terror finance analyst at Treasury: where there’s smoke there’s usually fire. It became clear by 2013 that Turkey has become a HQ for Hamas.

  15. It’s Turkey Day. And that means it’s time for my annual Turkey Day thread. We have a lot of things to be grateful for here in America. But our alliance with Turkey is not among them....
