A Holy day in Kabul today...that started so quiet and peaceful..ended in a massacre. 40 people killed in one blast. Mostly Afghan religious leaders were present. They were targeted in June. Then they made a statement abt the Taliban, saying they fight against Islam. No claim yet.

Maybe we stop writing articles as if the US generals are the true guiders in this war, who should be quoted the moment they open their mouth. Are they credible sources? Here in Kabul - also at embassies-they are often seen as a substantial part of the problem.

Fresh troops - all commandos - departed Jalalabad for Jaghori. Almost 5 days on, the district is still under attack of Taliban from several directions. Among fresh commandos, there are soldiers who are originally from the area so they know the land well.

What does suggest? In his time, in the early years of the War on Terror, some then weak Taliban wanted amnesty, retreat, but the then Afghan gov/US denied this. Now Taliban has grown to a powerful movement, who refuses to speak to Kabul/is difficult to reconcile.

Framing this solely as an ethnic conflict is not right. should dig into the background of these clashes, their leaders, and the role ethnicity plays in this.
