Windows 7 freezing.

I have absolutely idea why my computer keeps freezing I had an issue with the CPU thermal paste that I quickly fixed and this has not done the trick. I need help because it's getting really annoying having my computer freeze up in the middle of work or a game. Please ask me as many questions as you need I just want to fix this as I am at a loss of ideas.

  1. can you list your pc specs (cpu, gpu, ram, psu, etc...)
do you get bsod when this happens?
is this new build or a factory pc or a custom build?
  2. Computer setupCPU: AMD FX-6300 3.5GHz 6-Core
    Motherboard: ASUS M5A99X EVO R2.0 ATX AM3+
    RAM: G.Skill Ripjaws XSeries 8GB DDR3-1600
    Video Card: Radeon HD 4800
PSU: http://www.compleet-is.com/products/pdf/PHWPSUATXHIGHAL-057R.pdf (the 535 watt PSU version of this)

I do not get BSOD but it just freezes like my computer freezes on whatever it was last doing and the screens stay the same, the computer is still on but it stays the same and won't let me do anything. I tried ctrl alt del and nothing I tried alt tabbing to get some response and nothing. My mouse doesn't work at all either. The only way to free it up is to hold the power button and wait for it to turn off then turn it back on.
  3. could be a hard drive issue. Do you get any errors at all?
  4. Since the issue is random and there is no specific cause, then there are no specific answers.

Firstly, I would check to make sure your BIOS is updated to the latest version and all of your drivers are updated. Try re-seating your RAM and double check all of your connections on the Motherboard. Also, you might want to invest in another PSU, it could be showing signs of failing and that could be the cause of the freezing. I know I have gone through 3 PSU's in the past year, two of them had the same symptoms you are having now.

Let me know if anything improves or worsens!
  5. first thing i would do is this

    dl and install http://www.guru3d.com/files_details/display_driver_uninstaller_download.html
    power down
    power up into safe mode
uninstall graphic drivers new and old and ccc using tool
    power down
    power up into windows
go to amd's site to dl drivers
  6. Bad_Kitty13 I did what you said to do I'll tell you if it freezes again!
  7. So it literally just froze a little bit after I wrote that. So it's not the graphics, I've fixed the cpu issue I guess that leaves the hardrives, do you propose I wipe the drives completely and start over?
  8. try taking out your gpu or try a different psu in your setup, if the freezing stops it means your psu isnt pushing enough wattage
  9. also try resetting your bios to default settings

and if your not sunning on bios newer than 1006 then this is probably your problem
    http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/M5A99X_EVO_R20/#support
the 970 chipset needs that bios version to properly support your cpu
  10. I have the most recent bios for the PC. I'll double check everything again but I just have no clue what to do now.

Try resetting the CMOS from he pins on your board. To do this locate the pins on your board. They are on the opposite side of the CPU socket, above the right-most USB pin. Power off the computer and move the pin to the 2-3 position (it will be in 1-2 position originally). After 10 seconds move it back to the 1-2 position and boot into your BIOS and re-enter any information needed. I would also recommend trying a different power supply (PSU), and trying you computer without anything in the PCI slots to see if your GPU is 'sucking up' too much power.
  12. the suggestions from MrTuRtLe03 are good and would try these next, i realize you dont have onboard graphics but i would try the cmos reset

if problem still persists run http://www.memtest86.com/download.htm
you will need to download the cd or usb version and then power down and boot from the cd or usb

also what is your hdd so i can link some tests you can run to see if you have any bad sectors
  13. The issue I know what it is now, it has to be a memory issue, because this guy has the same problem as me exactly. http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/328192-30-asus-m5a99x

and no one was able to find an answer for him. He's having the exact same problem as me and I have no clue how to fix it.
