        QT 「英語の勉強してる人たちに説明するの大変ですよね。学校で習うのと違うので。」 ==> はい、私も。高校時代(1965年9月ー1968年6月)に「their」を単数として使ったならば赤点になったはずです。時代が変わると言語が進化(悪化?、ともかく変更)します。

        おっしゃる通りです。これまでも一般的な歴史は男性、そして勝者の眼からみた物語という批判があります。これ以外にも #mankind (人類)とかありますけどね。

        私はギリシャ語・ラテン語は知らないので、そこは分かりません。ただ、ゲラーさんの指摘のように言葉は社会的要請を受けて変化します。たとえ、元の文法や言語学の起源が「一定の意味であった」としても。そして日本語でも意味・用途は古典から大きく変わってきています。

        ゲラーさんの指摘もこの記事も重要なのは「なぜ語彙がそのように発展してきたか、変化してきたか」で、記事の中ではむしろ、#History は偏見のない「事実」なのか、あるいはフィクションも含む「〔彼の]物語」なのかという区別にフォーカス。著者は、歴史は後者を基に語られているのではと疑問を提示

        "they" has been used as a singular pronoun for several centuries - it's not a recent development in the slightest.

        Using "it" for a person is deeply insulting, because it implies that they're not human. It's only appropriate to use "it" to refer to objects, animals and babies.
