Qingdao International Expo Center
Qingdao International Expo Center is one of the largest
and most modern exhibit halls in China.
Located on Aoshan Bay, about 40 kilometers northeast of downtown Qingdao, Qingdao International Expo Center (QIEC) anchors what is known as the Water City at Aoshan Bay; part of a regional economic strategy designed to increase and promote tourism, convention and resort activities in the greater Qingdao area. This year, the new high speed light rail line from downtown Qingdao to Jimo will be in operation with a stop at the QIEC. Travel time from downtown Qingdao to QIEC via light rail will be just 30-40 minutes.
Designed by Seattle architecture firm NBBJ, QIEC features a grand lobby, 10 pillar-free exhibit halls, a multi-purpose hall and a large outdoor plaza. With its impressive architecture, modern amenities and a capacity to hold 6,000 standard-sized booths, Qingdao International Expo Center is one of the largest and most modern exhibit halls in China.
Sustainability
As part of a global effort to rethink architecture’s impact on the environment, the Qingdao International Expo Center implemented several sustainability strategies in its design and construction.
- Ventilation – Where possible, natural ventilation and solar stack vents reduce mechanical cooling loads
- Renewable Power – A photovoltaic system takes advantage of the large roof area and a district-wide central heat and power plant utilizes ocean water as a natural heatsink
- Natural Daylight – Large windows introduce daylight and reduce lighting energy demands
- Construction Efficiency – Uniformly designed exhibition halls expedited construction and helped reduce waste
