It’s a question I get all the time from guys – “Megan, what’s a good, year-round cologne for me?”
Or, sometimes, more to the point – “Just tell me what cologne girls like and I will go buy it.”
I mean, I get it. Most guys I know want to streamline their style – searching out clothes that match everything they already own, mastering a morning routine that takes ten minutes or less from shower to out the door. This desire for efficiency extends to nailing a signature scent. Some men swap their cologne when the weather changes, but many would prefer to keep only one bottle on the dresser all year round.
Unfortunately, my knowledge of men’s fragrance is pretty limited. Memories of my father’s green glass bottle of Brut gave way to an unfortunately long love affair with Abercrombie & Fitch Fierce in college. Today, I may admire a scent on a man but rarely think to ask the name of what he’s wearing.
So I asked for advice on year-round fragrances from someone whose nose is much more refined than my own. Barney Bishop runs Fragrant Moments, a men’s scent blog aiming to help men discover “the greater world of fragrances.” I asked for his picks on fragrances that guys can feel confident wearing all four season.

“A good ‘anytime’ cologne should err on the lighter side of the fragrance wheel,” says Bishop. That’s because as the seasons change, our body temperature changes, which in turn affects how the fragrances we wear smell both to ourselves and to others.
In warmer seasons, our body temperatures rise, intensifying the scent we’re wearing “to the point it jumps off our skin,” says Bishop. That’s why many men (and us ladies too!) swap out stronger, musky scents in exchange for lighter fragrances during the warm summer months.
In the fall and winter, however, we don’t (generally) sweat as much. This means we can wear bolder scents, like the spicy scents shunned in summer, without fear of overpowering a room.
If you don’t want to change your fragrance routine from one season to the next, Bishop advises you “look for scents in the citrus, floral, or aquatic family. These notes are all good for everyday use.”
An added bonus when wearing scents on the lighter side of the fragrance wheel: they’re often more office-friendly, thanks to their subtle notes.
Bishop recommends the following scents for year-round use. All are clean and floral, while possessing traditional masculine accents:

I haven’t worn cologne since I was 17 (I’m now 34). I prefer to let my pheromones do the work.
I did the same thing – I quit wearing cologne after high school, but then I started again when I was 34. I only have one bottle and its usually whatever my wife has given me for a gift. I don’t mind wearing it now…and I kind of like it.
Ditto StyleDad, although I retired a little later (maybe 22?).
All I have to do is remember to shower and my wife says she loves the way I smell!
I have been using Nautica Voyage for a few years now. I got it as a gift from my then-girlfriend, now-wife who picked it out. If you have a significant other, having them go pick out something they like is always a good option if you aren’t sure which way to go.
I agree with this in theory, but what if it smells totally different on you than it did in the bottle when she smelled it?? I think fragrance shopping is a great date activity – you can pick something you both like out together!
From what I’ve read on this subject it takes about an hour for the cologne to show its true scent after you spray it on. Also, one spray at the throat, or behind the neck, or on the inside of each ankle are apparently the best places to apply it.
I’ve never heard the ankle thing, though I’ve heard on the wrists works very well also.
Fragrance should be applied to pulse points. This is where the blood vessels are closest to the skin giving off more heat and acting like mini fragrance pumps. Pulse points are the wrist, behind the ear, crook of the arm and knee, base of the throat. Also, for long lasting fragrance spray at the ankles, it allows the fragrance to blossom up.
Oh of course, we went together for that reason. It is definitely a great date idea.

I usually get a bottle of colonge every Christmas from my mom, I usually just have to let her know which brand I want. Last year I got Ysl and I have been getting complements all year. Some women from work have been baring the nose in my chest. A bit awkward but I at least know they really like it.

Hey, I wear Italian Cypress by Tom Ford. It’s a great year long scent, not over powering but still woodsy so ya smell like a man
Tom Ford’s scents are amaaazing. all good picks! very manly-but-not-macho
Creed Aventus – is by far the best cologne I have ever tried, although a little pricey it is well worth it – every time I use it people stop me and ask what I’m wearing. Ralph Lauren Blue smells a little like this and is by far cheaper.
My 2nd go to is Ralph Lauren Purple label, again expensive but well worth it – it has now been discontinued and is now only sold at Ralph Lauren stores.
That Ralph Laurel Purple label scent is definitely something to buy in bulk whenever you’re in the store!
Will need to sample the Creed one. I am a fan of their Himalaya, Silver Mountain Water, and Vetiver. Lighter scents that I like include Diptyque Philosykos (sp?), Marc Jacobs by Marc Jacobs, Sander for Jil Sander as well as the first two Creed ones mentioned above.

– A sweet scent, I use this for family functions and events. Also used for date nights when a more refined fragrance is desired.

Thank you for this post! I have been browsing some colognes recently so this is perfectly timed advice.
Have to look check some of these out. I don’t normally wear cologne as its not part of my routine and normally only think about it for special dates. I do however have a bottle of the Brooks Brothers stuff I picked up while checking out a year or two ago. I get nothing but rave reviews when I happen to have it on. Not bad for a cheap bottle of store brand stuff.
I wear scents on a regular basis, usually everyday, because why not? Just take it easy on the sprays, usually once on the chest and maybe once on my wrist (the projection is much better but not overpowering.)
I only have one of these colognes listed, and that’s Creed’s Aventus. Very expensive, but also incredible. Don’t buy this one until you’ve smelt it on yourself. Some people like it, some people don’t. But I do know that people, especially more affluent women, tend to notice this one more than anything. Very smoky and mysterious.
What I like most about this one is that the character will change throughout the day, and tends to last, especially if you go to the gym or start to sweat after maybe 10 hours after first application. Word of warning: all of your scarves will start to smell awesome, pretty much forever. This is a good thing.
I tend to wear this daily, and YSL “La Nuit de L’Homme.” You’ll know it by the dark bottle. I wear the perfume version. It’s very woodsy and masculine, but has some sweet, dark florals at the end as well. Wonderful, I get complimented even more than the Aventus, and it doesn’t cost nearly as much. Recommended as well.

Terre d’Hermes is a great year-round scent and extremely well blended IMO.
Terre d’Hermes has a great reputation indeed. I’d like to give Hermes a try but it is not available in my country.
Totally depends on the fellow. My man is a HUGE cologne guy (he has about 9 in rotation) and the best scent on him is Chanel Bleu which matches his style + personality really well. It can be overwhelming for summer so he switches to Gucci Guilty which is lighter + sweeter. It’s also more subtle. I like his John Varvatos as well for when he’s feeling spicy. Pun intended. I alternate between about 15 bottles of cologne, so i’ll only consider the classics. I think only Davidoff’s cool water could make it in all seasons. A small buff of Armani’s Eau pour Homme or Issey Miyake’s Eau d’Issey, or even Guerlain’s Habit Rouge could work all year long. BUT, you’ll get bored in the end if you wear the same fragrance over and over.
My guess anyway is that we are made to believe that we have to alternate between different frangrances according to weather, seasons, mood changes, girlfriends, activities..
An all year round fragrance is RIsky Business,
I felt the need to switch it up recently as well and tried a bunch! (I’m sure they loved that, they were probably choking for hours after I left Haha) I went with the Calvin Klein Encounter and love it along with the compliments
That Odin up there, Amanu 06, is a good pick. It’s not cheap, however and can only be ordered unless you’re in New York. The longevity of Odin’s products isn’t always the best.
Creed Aventus is also a bit spendy. And while the people who love it really love it with a fanatic zeal, there are plenty who don’t take to it quite too much.
In the end, go to a store and try out colognes. Never buy on a 30-second spray. Spray some on your hand/arm and live with it for the day. Unlike electronics or cars, whether you’ll like a cologne or not is totally subjective and not about numbers or figures or features. Scent is very much a personal sense.
I personally have several hundred samples, and a few full bottles. I like:
ds&durga – mississippi medicine (and sir, and burning barbarshop…)
van cleef & arpels – pour homme (classic masculine incense)
comme de garcons – kyoto (or any in their incense line)
odin – century (a vanilla)
tom ford – tobacco vanille (vanilla, but spendy)
mugler – pure malt (another vanilla)
frederic malle – musc ravageur (musky vanilla, amazing)
way too many more…
Want to smell different from everyone else and don’t mind some potency? Try anything from Slumberhouse.
I have too many scents than I can count. I like to change up alot. There are many options to choose when selecting fragrances and even many ways to classify scents. One can take the approach of selecting a modern scent (receives advertising) versus a classic scent (has been around for a while, hence classic)

I’m more into classics so I lean towards the colognes my dad always wore. Presently I’m stuck on Canoe. Its not over the top, has a good manly smell, and girls I dated in the past have always loved it. Plus, no one ever goes “Oh, you’re wearing ______.” Its more, “You smell really good, what is that?” Another plus: doesn’t come close to breaking the wallet.
