    For countries aiming to check Iran’s influence, there’s more than one approach to Syria: • Write off Damascus as hopelessly Iran-owned and oppose it, or • Co-invest in Damascus to diversify its base of support and reduce its reliance on Iran, strengthening an independent Syria.

    There are more & more indications of a rapprochement w. , possibly paving the way for to follow suit.…

    Tough to read this and not come away with the impression that Maqdisi and Abu Qatadah are autonomous thinkers, not مرقعين or جامية الجهاد – integral to Salafi-jihadism, but also moving independently of its groups and structures, and of each other.

    Important if depressing thread on . 👇

    I've been thinking a lot about the humanitarian situation in recently. There is a fair chance that famine will be declared there soon. People will respond with shock and surprise. But people need to know that this was absolutely predictable and preventable.
