Safest is nothing but deodorant - it’s risky to frag up for a job interview

[–]DontTouchMyRafs8 sprays 19 points20 points  (1 child)

I wore 8 sprays of Tobacco Oud and even got offered the manager position ( was applying as a pizza delivery boy)

[–]ShardShank 14 points15 points  (0 children)

sounds like a tall tale if I've ever seen one

[–]Dark-XWarm Spicy 13 points14 points  (1 child)

My God some of these answers are bad.

OP, wear something light & inoffensive. Avoid anything with strong projection & anything that might be polarizing, meaning people's opinion split in half about it.

The safest would be something well-liked, preferably light & citrusy, like Clinique Happy for men or Armani Acqua di Gio. Make sure not over spray it. Limit yourself to around 4 sprays max.

Take a good shower, be well decently groomed, & be confident. Even if you feel you're gonna fail, fail with confidence.

Good luck.

Yeah, that's one of the things that came to mind - confidence. Just knowing you're wearing a frag can help you feel more complete and confident. Can be a single shot of something light as hell that they won't even smell, but you'll know you put something on.

[–]JohannesVanDerWhales 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Just don't. Interviews are all about being conservative. There's a chance someone might not like the fragrance or think it's appropriate. They're not going to hire you because you smell nice. They might not hire you if they take issue with it.

Deodorant. Good hygiene. Wash your a**

[–]_ShortGirlProblems_ 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Years ago I went for a job interview and the interviewer commented at the end that I smelled like his wife. I was wearing a Bath and Body Works lotion (I don't recall which). I just said "Hopefully that's a good thing!" I guess it was, since I got the job :D

[–]emt1986 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t.

[–]DeathandblackmetalKing Kouros 10 points11 points  (1 child)

A lot of people say to not wear fragrance to an interview. To that I say, "Screw that!". Fragrance has become a part of my life and I might feel incomplete if I'm not wearing something when I'm at work. Just go LIGHT and do something 'inoffensive'. Like, maybe to where you can't even smell it yourself, but you know you're wearing something. Like a placebo affect - can help boost confidence. Something like a single shot to the chest/torso under shirt of Mugler Cologne, Grey Vetiver, Eau de Lacoste L.12.12 Blanc, etc.
Edit: I went back in my wearing history, and I guess I wore Chanel Pour Monsieur EdT Concentrée to the interview for the place I currently work at. I probably only did 1 shot to the chest/torso. A little bit more ballsy than like Grey Vetiver or something.

[–]yamborma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Placebo effect/confidence is a good point. Especially if you normally wear something, going completely without might make you feel a little off.

Also, if you're wearing something pleasant and not overpowering, it will probably make you a little more memorable. And there's always a small chance you're wearing a scent that they (or their SO, parent, whatever) wear and they'll actually associate you with that favorable scent memory subconsciously.

[–]Imbrulie 7 points8 points  (1 child)

You should wear Secretions Magnifiques to show you're not afraid to be bold.

But seriously I wouldn't use parfume some deodorant sure... perfume I don't know.

[–]erako 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mother of god.

But yeah. That or 10 sprays of 24 Gold, maybe layered with By The Fireplace.

[–]TanklesXXL 8 points9 points  (3 children)

I wore Amouage Reflection Man to my recent interview, had 0 issues and got the job.

[–]noseblindguy 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I wore the same, but I didn't get the job :/

[–]TanklesXXL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just keep on applying!

[–]thornside 8 points9 points  (2 children)

I wear cologne pretty much everywhere but I'd draw the line at a job interview. No one's going to hire you because they love the way you smell, but you sure could lose an offer.

[–]wereworm5 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Shouldn’t it mess with the brains of interviewer. I am sure it would give a positive vibe if you wear a correct perfume and not too much

[–]thornside 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OK, so what's the correct perfume and how much is too much? Both of those statements are completely subjective and therein lies the issue. What 99 people might love, 1 might not and if that 1 is the person you're interviewing with, why risk it?

[–]flyguy_1914 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s recommended not to because there’s always the chance of the person conducting the interview not liking your fragrance and that opinion affecting the outcome of the interview.

With that being said I wore light applications of Bleu De Chanel at an interview before and Dior Homme Sport , and had positive responses from the interviewer post interview.

[–]yamborma 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Probably just trying to sell. You can probably wear something light like a Prada L'Homme or something like that, but play it conservative on number of sprays and the scent you pick.

[–]AnnieB25 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Mugler Cologne since it smells like expensive soap. But no matter what you wear, do NOT overspray.

[–]ginboothAventus for the rest of us 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Do not wear Oud Wood Intense unless the job requires zipper masks...

[–]motherpluckin-feistySmellier than thou 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Bahahahaha haha hahaha haha

Oh God.

I'm 2 for 2 on job interviews. I wore D&G Rose the One to my old job interview (got hired). Wore Fracas to this interview - got hired. Be yourself, unless you want to be doomed to being "innofensively scented" guy for the rest of your career. Might as well due your collection and just stick to VIW.

[–]ThePhattestOne 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wear nothing, there's really nothing to gain and much more to lose given that some places even have a formal or informal fragrance policy

[–]Billy_Belial 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend to wear a fragrance, just avoid club bangers, heavy scents and overly popular "teenage" colognes. Here are few recommendations:

  • Prada L'Homme
  • Tom Ford Grey Vetiver Eau De Toilette
  • Yves Saint Laurent L'Homme
  • Amouage Reflection
  • Giorgio Armani Acqua Di Gio Profumo
  • Terre D'Hermes Eau De Toilette
  • Versace Pour Homme
  • Bleu De Chanel Eau De Toilette
  • Montblanc Individuel
  • Dior Fahrenheit Cologne

[–]shALKE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Of course you should use one. It inspires confidence, just don't over do it, use something appropiate and do not over-use it.

[–]B3njaminjames 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Something like Dior homme eau or what ever it's called.

Basically light and pleasant and not too much of it. Just make sure you do everything else hygiene related first. So shave, shower, hair cut, smart clothing, shines shoes, trimmed nails. Then a nice whiff will be icing on the cake. Oh and make sure you smile!

[–]MinimalCoincidence 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Safest choice is no fragrance. I don’t think lightly scented body wash or lotion will matter much but I wouldn’t spray anything personally.

[–]madridgalactico 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wore Tom Ford Oud Wood for a dream job and got it. Coincidence?

[–]Biggity_Biggity_BongThat's what I do. I stink and I know things. 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, I wore Issey Miyake L’eau D’Issey Absolue. Got the job. YMMV.

[–]BigPimpinLapras 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Molecule 04

[–]Sunshinegatsby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There can't be one good job interview fragrance. I'd say go for something that makes you feel secure and confident, but go light on it.

[–]Pocketsandddd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

2 sprays max of something light/clean/fresh/inoffensive , at least an hour before your interview is scheduled to start so the fragrance has time to settle down. No one dislikes ppl for smelling clean:)

I've also got an interview next week and will probably go with bdc or dh sport 2012 .

Good luck and let's get these jobssss

[–]darkesnow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think I wore one spritz of Prada Infusion d'Iris to my last one. Just a hint, and it's nice and clean and fresh like linen sheets.

[–]cheir0n 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tom Ford Tuscan Leather to show them who is the boss!

[–]Woodsand1[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for all the responses. I’ll come clean now and say I knew it would be an interesting question and so it has proved to be. I was in charge of many interview panels for years before early retirement and would certainly have taken a negative view of anyone, especially men, turning up with noticeable fragrance. I will shave and shower as I do every day without fail and use my current favourite Molton Brown vetiver and grapefruit deodorant. I need a part-time job to finance my fragrance collecting.

[–]betterbydesign 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Light Aventus

[–]erako 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d go for it. Wearing something. I think with my current collection I’d probably reach for either Gucci Pour Homme I or Gucci Pour Homme II.

[–]Dystopiq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One spray of something light. They should only be able to smell you if they're uncomfortably close.

[–]scientificLoserKiss from a nose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dior Eau Sauvage seems perfect. Fresh, crisp, optimistic and cordial.

[–]Nulltor 0 points1 point  (10 children)

Someone came in for a high profile position where I work wearing code profumo. Wtf.

[–]Gargantuace 1 point2 points  (9 children)

Is there something wrong with code profumo?

[–]Nulltor 1 point2 points  (8 children)

https://www.fragrantica.com/perfume/Giorgio-Armani/Armani-Code-Profumo-34761.html It's like a high powered night club scent. Really unsuitable for an interview.

[–]erako 4 points5 points  (5 children)

I have to disagree. Primarily because that opinion is that of fragheads. No one else would recognize that it was code profumo or that it’s a night club scent unless they’re into frags like us.

I’ve worn Aventus (pineapple batch), Volutes and Verveine all to interviews and I wouldn’t classify them as office scents or interview scents. But no one really would know any different. Volutes was a hell of a risk too.

[–]Nulltor 3 points4 points  (2 children)

I should have clarified; his wasn't a subtle daubing of an interesting scent. I've worn Floris Santal to interviews and felt comfortable. This was an extreme amount of profumo, freshly applied, in the middle of the day, in summer. It was an absurd choice.

[–]erako 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Oh. That’s a horrible life decision. Like wearing 24 Gold in a dry California summer.

[–]Nulltor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The position was for a chief financial officer of a massive department of an austere and conservative organisation. It could only have been weirder if he had worn Joop.

[–]biiin 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I’ve worn Aventus (pineapple batch), Volutes and Verveine all to interviews

Did you get the job?

[–]erako 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The volutes, no. However it was for the OCRC, which was the Ontario government version of a pot dispensary. And no one got the job because the project was shut down and they went online only. However I did get a second interview, but didn’t matter lol. So I’ll have to test that again, shouldn’t be hard as I’m unemployed.

[–]Gargantuace 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Gotcha. Sorry, I'm pretty new to the whole fragrance thing and haven't really caught on to a lot of the intricacies of which scents are appropriate for different situations/seasons/time of day or not.

[–]Nulltor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't be sorry, if you are new to this then asking for peoples perspectives is the perfect place to start. There aren't any rules about what should be worn where or when; its just what works for you personally, or what you feel comfortable in, or what other people like. I found the reviews on fragrantica to be a good resource when I was getting into frags more seriously. They show the massive differences in how people perceive the same scent, and where/when the scent seems to work best.

wear deodorant
