Preparation of erythritol tetranitrate (tetranitrin)
100 g of powdered erythritol is added, with good stirring and in small quantities at a time, to 400 g strongly cooled nitric acid (d=1.5). The temperature is not allowed to rise above 0° C. When all has dissolved, 900 g of concentrated sulfuric acid are added, and the mixture allowed to stand, when the crude erythritol tetranitrate crystallizes out. After several hours it is filtered off, washed with ice-cold water until the washings are free from sulfate ions, and recrystallized from hot ethyl alcohol. Erythritol tetranitrate is a colorless crystalline solid which melts at 61° C. Erythritol tetranitrate is sparingly soluble in water and readily soluble in alcohol.
