Hello , I am currently looking into demonstrations or strikes or other forms of civilian shows of discontent in Afrin post-Turkish occupation aimed at specific groups. If you know of any, could you please try to share the information and sources with me? Thanks.

This might sound impossible at the moment, but with the right external incentives and domestic environment (split between nationalists and Islamists), it should at least be entertained as a policy worth pursuing.

The only way the US is going to be able to achieve peace between Turkey and Syrian Kurds (which I doubt the US actually wants to make happen in reality) is to push harder for the resumption of peace talks within Turkey between the state and the PKK.

Expanded Kurdish rights or even self-rule in Syria is seen as an existential threat to Turkey with its Kurdish population hovering around the 20 million mark. Concessions are only seen as a vindication of the longer-term interest of wiping out Kurdish self-government.

I would like to add that in the scheme of things, concessions to Turkey do not produce amicable results but rather the expectation of more concessions. Realistically, the only recent breakthroughs in bilateral relations with Turkey have come by force (Russian jet, US sanctions).

I would love to know more about this (and I hope someone informs me if there is more to it), but for the moment it just seems like the interim Governor of is continuing his divisive Arabising policy ahead of the governorship returning to the majority.

Once, months ago when the Turkish occupation began, rebel activists decried the "settler" label TFSA gangs and their families were given and claimed they would be more just to the people of Afrin than the SDF were. What a sad vindication of the label than this.

It is only fitting that the gangs in Afrin emulate the successful Israeli settler methods of destroying olive orchards to make sure the land devalues enough for the real owners to vacate their rights completely.

One can not begin to describe the horrific effects this has on the local ethnically cleansed population in exile. TFSA gangs make a small profit while the land becomes useless for its original owners for decades when they eventually return.

My last few months have gone into pulling this together. Please give it a read! The full dataset used to inform this article and our own (far less flashy) write up will be released later today.

Using the option of military intervention to support a preferred policy outcome has been a staple of Turkish foreign policy since mid-to-late 1990s. USG should take the threat of escalation in Kobane very seriously.

Utterly horrendous. The monument to 's worst ever terror attack that killed over 100, Kurds and HDP supporters, vandalised by Turkish nationalists. A lasting memory from that time was that the President never gave an address about it. The poison of nationalism.
