The proof essentially works, I think. See the end of this thread for what I mean by that:https://groups.google.com/forum/m/#!topic/superpermutators/j5y24bOemiM …

But because it isn’t part of The Literature, other mathematicians are reluctant to cite it or rely on it in their work. So it’s in a strange limbo state.

Actually, I get the impression the proof was originally posted to 4chan, and was copied to the wiki by someone else, which is why it’s credited to Anonymous.

I think this is an archive of the original 4chan thread about the problem: http://4watch.org/superstring/

Here is another write-up of the anonymous proof, by Jay Pantone: https://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&pid=forums&srcid=MTUwMTUxMjExNDk4NTk5NjY5OTkBMDMxNDgwMTA5ODA5OTYyNzcyNDQBdlNFMnM3eTVCUUFKATAuMQEBdjI&authuser=0 …

Hot news! The original 4chan thread in which the proof was posted is archived at https://warosu.org/sci/thread/S3751105#p3751197 … Many thanks to the anonymous internet sleuth who dug this up and sent it to me.

Please, can you explain the difference with a De Bruijn sequence of order n on an alphabet of size n ? I can't spot it :(
-
A De Bruijn sequence has to contain every possible sequence of a certain length, including sequences with repetitions. A superpermutation only has to contain permutations: different orderings without repetition.
-
E.g. 123121321 contains all six permutations of 1, 2, 3 (123, 132, 213, 231, 312, 321) so it’s a superpermutation; but it isn’t a De Bruijn sequence because it doesn’t contain 111, 112, etc.
-
Thanks :)

Is this the thing you spoke about at EMF 2014?
-
It is indeed!
-
Wait what, when? Was this a lightning talk?
-
Yes, it was a lightning talk. https://youtu.be/T0FjxpPOERA Thanks for EMF Camp!

Right before I got up and basically told a jokehttp://sam.pikesley.org/talks/#the-story-of-the-arsebees-emf-2014 …

Is there an entry for the sequence in OEIS yet? Will it end up being called the Haruhi Sequence?
-
Someone should add the 4chan link to the list of references!

I did a little googling and I think this person also posted here, maybe try sending a private message?https://forums.warpportal.com/index.php?/topic/52873-my-thoughts-on-the-mvp-changes/ …

I found that too! I didn’t know what to make of it. The content is serious, but in context the intent seems to be trolling. I wondered if someone had copy-pastaed a random impressive-sounding post from /sci/ for trolling purposes.

The Banksy of mathematics.
