A few people have responded to this tweet as if I’m saying this is why he was killed (or even justifying it) - that is a complete misreading of my point, he was killed in spite of those sectarian opinions, not because of them.

“You’re Shi’a aren’t you?...You didn’t see freedom in Syria, you only saw Takfiris and your belonging to the [Shi’a] sect explains that” https://twitter.com/jkhashoggi/status/342301821748006913?s=21 …pic.twitter.com/vMCDrFDP1z

Khashoggi: ISIS beheading captive Syrian soldiers is an effective military strategy. They know what they’re doing. https://twitter.com/JKhashoggi/status/492460771872235520 …pic.twitter.com/rDqlhzpmTL

I like to think of him as the personified version of Al Jazeera - he may come across reasonable in English, until you hear what he’s got to say in Arabic.
-
To be honest, he was almost equally as bad in English he just moderated his language and tone and adjusted it for a Western audience. Lest it be forgotten not long ago he casually called for the US to partition Syria.

what a time to bring this up. what a time. obviously people will think you are justifying his murder, look at your bloody timing.
-
You mean the exact moment that he is being portrayed globally in a dishonest and inaccurate way? I’d say that was an appropriate time to mention it.
-
what is so wrong with a journalist expressing his views? must journalists pander to a section of society that have opposing views?
-
by "pander to a section of society that have opposing views" do you mean not support the slaughter of religious minorities? If so, yes, I would argue it would actually be good if "journalists" didn't do that.
-
that is blowing things way out of proportion. i have seen the tweet in this thread and it is not supporting slaughter of any minority. as someone rightly said on this thread, you are diminishing his death.

Why is it remarkable that people are sympathetic to a highly visible victim of a brutal, recent murder? A victim murdered by a widely reviled prince, no less!
-
Are you responding to the wrong tweet? because this isn’t relevant to what I wrote. One can easily condemn a murder without portraying the victim disingenuously.
-
It's not just about moral revulsion at the murder. People also feel a degree of sympathy for the victim in the immediate aftermath -- especially given the graphic details & the fact that many American media people personally knew him. And sympathy leads to sympathetic coverage.
-
An irony here is that the American writers that are offering a more critical assessment of Khashoggi's views tend to be on the political right -- and deeply anti-Iran. Leveraging the critique to blunt the moral force of ongoing arguments against Saudi.
-
E.g. "This is not to suggest that the killing of Khashoggi is justified. It is, however, meant to observe that characterizations of him in the media are not fully accurate."https://nypost.com/2018/10/18/why-the-saudis-despised-jamal-khashoggi/amp/?__twitter_impression=true …

He once considered a war crime - beheading captive soldiers - as an effective military tactic! https://twitter.com/JKhashoggi/status/492460771872235520 …pic.twitter.com/3NI4WtK4vX

You do realize that Khashoggi actually served with Al-Qaida right, he made numerous comments supporting their genocides in Iraq & was a regular cheerier of them in Syria (Al nusra) when those terrorists went on a beheading spreepic.twitter.com/9vpLqN2Uft

he was a defector who was loyal to the wrong set of princes. But I do think he highlights how much is at stake once you endear yourself financially and politically within these fragile structures

Freedom of the press & freedom of speech are a fundamental human right. He could have been praising Hitler or recruiting for a death cult. Who cares. Silencing any voice by carving up a live human & chucking parts in bin bag should not be encouraged in 21st century.
