Most flights will stay at Ataturk for the rest of the year because clearly the new airport is nowhere near ready. But God help anyone who flies on the few flights that will transfer on 29 October so some very important people can cut a ribbon.

Istanbul's new airport, 16 days from its scheduled opening. If the terminal floods when it rains, how can anyone trust the runways, security perimeters, you know, the things that really have to work to keep everyone alive?

I am genuinely curious as to whether Trump is intentionally belittling Erdoğan through constant contradiction of Turkey’s official story or whether he’s just trying to be nice and not understanding what his words mean.

The word “hostage” is doing a lot of work in this tweet. It may seem conciliatory but this is the equivalent of calling Turkey a rogue state.

Turkey’s “religion budget” soars as science, industry and technology budget is slashed. It’s not only the US where hopes and prayers are expected to change things that only reforms can solve.

Before someone jumps in and misunderstands the analogy, I am NOT saying Turkey is in any way like the USSR. The point here is about who can and who cannot make claims about judicial independence the day after an executive deal was leaked and on the day all witnesses recanted.

The Brunson ending may have made realpolitik sense. It definitely delivered a positive outcome. But no-one can argue that it has showcased an independent judiciary. Today was farce and tragedy rolled into one absurd show.

“Releasing Pastor Brunson is not a structural reform” says leading economist, as Turks realise there are no more excuses left for the tanking economy.

The wisdom of crowds. 42% foresaw the release of Brunson (and this poll was posted before the deal was announced). Well done for being good at guessing!

And with the Brunson case done, USD/TRY.... shoots up? Markets have probably started pricing in the next crisis - there’s plenty of candidate issues to choose from.

Schrödinger's Pastor: Brunson is both guilty of being a PKK/FETÖ spy and is being released to go home.

CHP picking today to announce its Mayoral candidate, the day when Brunson's court case is headline news, is the most CHP thing ever. They are terrible at politics. They might as well announce Brunson as the candidate.

If true that the trial will continue but Brunson is allowed to leave the country, I can't wait for the potential extradition request in a couple of months.

One thing no-one will miss if the Brunson case ends is papaz puns. "Papaz" in Turkish means both priest and the King card. The headlines and political soundbites have been excruciating as a result.

Given the next Ambassador to Turkey could be Kanye West or some MAGA Islamophobe, I think we're OK as we are.

You remember how fast the AKP narrative turned when the McKinsey deal got canned? Expect that but on amphetamines and some seriously whirling dervish positions once the Brunson decision is published. Rule No. 1 in Turkey: whatever happens, the AKP was always right.

Given falsified statements in a court of law are a crime, the same curious soul might question whether charges will be brought against these secret witnesses. Not a thread at which I would pull, oh no, but question marks abound.

A curious or skeptical soul would ask why all the secret witnesses have chosen today to retract/alter their statements and what that means about the entire two-year process.
